My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Howie is a 4-year-old fun-loving Bulldog mix with an infectious personality! At 53 pounds, Howie is the perfect mix of playful and cuddly. He LOVES toys—especially ones he can carry proudly around the yard—and is learning fetch too. Whether he’s chasing toys or taking short walks, Howie loves to play with you—a few play sessions per day keep him happy and well-behaved. After playtime, he’s more than happy to settle in for a long nap, and is happy to bunny hop up the stairs to be with you!

Howie has already shown he’s a star in social settings! During a recent outing to a local brewery, he charmed everyone so much that the staff wanted to say goodbye before he left. He’d be an amazing brewery or café companion for someone looking to bring their dog along for fun outings. He enjoys the company of other dogs after proper introductions, and while he hasn’t encountered cats or kids yet, his sweet and adaptable nature suggests he’d do well with the right guidance.

Though he was a little anxious at first, Howie has adjusted well to life with his foster family so far. He is house-trained but benefits from a consistent routine to avoid occasional accidents, especially when left alone for extended periods. Regular outdoor breaks and taking him out right after crate time help him do his best. When he's crated, Howie loves having a cozy bed inside and settles in without barking, though he sometimes needs a little coaxing (a treat works wonders!). His foster family is working on his leash manners and resource guarding with toys—he’s improving with positive reinforcement, such as trading a treat for a toy when it’s time to put it away. Howie would benefit from someone who is willing to be patient while he learns the rules of a new home, and who is willing to put structure and routine in place so he can feel safe and confident.

If you’re searching for a loyal, playful, and easygoing companion, Howie is ready to join your family and fill your home with love and laughter!

The adoption fee is $450. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
