My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Elli!  She is a little over a year old, 80ish lb, Great Pyrenees mix who was sadly surrendered by her family because the other dogs in the family were attacking her. Amazingly, she still loves all dogs and want to play with them and she still has plenty of puppy energy!

Elli is in a foster home now and her foster mom shared that ‘Elli is a sweet, happy-go-lucky girl that loves all people and dogs. She gives a Pyrenees warning bark when someone new comes in the house, but immediately comes to them for pets.  She plays hard – will pounce and use her paws to bat the other dogs, so may not do well with small dogs or older dogs.  Elli also loves to ‘bite wrestle’ and will roll around playing in the house with her foster brother until he’s had enough. She would be fine as an only dog if her new family finds ways to keep her busy and active but would love a sibling even more to play with her, and one closer to her age too.  Elli will fetch a tennis ball or frisbee (most of the time) and bring it back to drop it or holds it gently in her mouth.

Elli is fully house trained and when I say ‘let’s go outside’, she runs to the back door.  She will also stand by the door when she needs to go out.  She was crated her first night here and quietly laid in the crate watching me until I finished getting ready.  Since she’s on the large size (about 80 pounds), I’ve also let her sleep free in the bedroom so that she can stretch out with no issues.  She will roam so I keep her in a contained area at night. She sleeps part of the night on a chaise, part on the floor, and part in the crate.

Her personality is that of a big live teddy bear! Very affectionate, very loving, loves to get and give attention and be petted and loves to be around people. She will do great in a home if she is able to socialize with other animals and or people. (but no chickens or turkeys)

Elli loves to go for walks and does pretty well on a leash.  She stands quietly to put her harness on and then runs to the door.  She generally walks on my side when walking alone but does get distracted by sniffing. She will also lean into my legs when something scares her.  When she walks with her foster brother, she wants to be along his side and will pull to get close to him.

Like a typical Pyrenees, Elli will bark at anything unexpected – the Amazon driver, someone walking their dog, a kid riding their bike, or even a leaf blowing across the yard. Great Pyrs love to hang out in the yard to partol and make sure things are safe, so she would love a home with a fenced in yard so she can do just that! She wants to keep me company and hangs out in my office when I’m working.  She loves chew toys and squeakers but has left my things alone so far.  All in all a great pup that needs a great home!’

More about this rescue

Early in 1994, members of the Greater Louisville Golden Retriever Club began to see the need for an organization to rehabilitate and find homes for displaced and abused Golden Retrievers. A number of folks in this club began organizing an ad hoc rescue group. As the number of rescues increased over a period of months, this “wet behind the ears” group came up with a name and in 1996, incorporated the organization now known as Golden Retriever Rescue & Adoption of Needy Dogs (GRRAND). The rest, as they say, is history!
