My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Martha is a beautiful 2-year old female kitty who was brought to the HSOV on May 28, 2024 by a Good Samaritan who had found Martha and her five kittens (Chicklit, Cow, Donkey, Goat, and Pig) in mid-May 2024. Martha was raising her little family in a barn not far from our shelter. Her kittens were 8-10 weeks old at that time and had been weaned, so Martha needed a little help to provide food for her babies and to keep them safe.

Thankfully one of our fabulous foster mothers (Lynn Bostrom) offered Martha and her kittens a temporary foster home on May 29th where they would receive extra TLC and have plenty of nutritious food.

Martha has a gray short smooth coat, a long tail, and a pretty face with golden eyes, a gray velvet nose, and long white whiskers.

Martha came back to HSOV in mid-July since she had been limping/favoring one of her back legs when she arrived at our shelter in late May, and the condition seemed to have become even more apparent.

Martha was given vaccinations, wormer, and flea treatment on July 17, 2024. She was examined by one of our wonderful local veterinarians that day and an x-ray revealed that Martha had a fractured femur bone in her right hind leg.

Martha underwent surgery to repair the fracture and was also given rabies vaccine on July 17th. The surgery was successful and Martha's leg was healing well. Her stitches were removed on July 31st though she still had a surgical pin in place. Martha was prescribed 'cage rest-and-relaxation' to ensure that she would continue to heal. Martha weighed 7.4 lbs on July 31st. She was given booster vaccines on August 14, 2024.

She was scheduled to have the surgical pin removed on September 18, 2024 if things progressed as expected. Unfortunately Martha's leg was not yet healed enough so the surgery to remove the pin (and to spay her while under anesthesia) was postponed.

This little sweetheart has a lovable outgoing personality and is a pushover for attention. Even when she was wearing 'the cone of shame' following her surgery, Martha was always ready for some petting and to be loved upon. Now that she is feeling better, Martha is a bit of an 'escape artist' and looks for the slightest opportunity to enjoy some out-of-cage time and lead our kennel techs on a merry chase (smile).

Martha's kittens came back to HSOV on August 19th and were spayed/neutered on August 20, 2024. Martha (and their compassionate foster mother) provided a loving home for those five happy, healthy kittens who are now ready to find homes of their very own.

Four of Martha's kittens were adopted in late August 2024 and the fifth one was adopted on October 1st.

We hope that their mother (Martha) who gave them life and nurtured them under less-than-ideal conditions in the barn where she watched over them for the first 2-months of their lives will also find a fantastic home where she will be loved and cherished.

Martha was spayed on October 30, 2024 and the surgical pin in her in her femur was removed. So she will soon be ready to find her dream home either through adoption or rescue.

Rescue groups may contact our HSOV Feline Rescue Coordinator via email (sharonpaul2@suddenlink.net). We can usually help with transportation.

Update: These glamour photos of Martha were taken on November 17, 2024 when HSOV Volunteers Emma Dahlgren and Carolyn Blanchard spent time with Martha in our 'studio'. Martha is quite the social butterfly and continues to love attention from her people friends. She was a delight to photograph as she strolled around the (fake) pumpkins and kept coming back to Emma and Carolyn for petting and to be loved upon.

Now that she is feeling better, Martha is a bit of an 'escape artist' and looks for the slightest opportunity to enjoy some out-of-cage time and lead our kennel techs on a merry chase (smile).

We've learned that while Martha loves her people friends, she is not a fan of other cats and would prefer to find a home that she did not have to share with feline friends.
