Meet Solveig! This sweet girl is happiest when she's with her people and loves nothing more than to cuddle. While she’ll nap in her crate when needed, Solveig would much rather be by your side.
She’s still blossoming and coming out of her shell, showing a bit of interest in chewing on bones or ropes but mostly enjoying the simple pleasure of your company. One of her most endearing traits is her adorable little voice, complete with squeaky yawns that will melt your heart.
Before being rescued by Ruff Start, Solveig didn’t have regular access to food, so she’s incredibly food-motivated and will do just about anything for a treat or kibble. This makes her a quick learner and eager to please—training her should be a breeze!
Here’s a synopsis of our first meeting with sweet, Solveig.
When I first met this girl in a dark, chilly parking lot south of the city, I was struck by her remarkably cheery demeanor. She’d just endured an 8-hour odyssey across the windswept plains from some dusty corner of South Dakota huddled in a van which, judging by the smell, must also have been packed with aging bleu cheese. But she wagged and wiggled and took in the new sights and smells of the world around her like a fieldtripping middleschooler from Poughkeepsie that had just stepped off the subway in Times Square. Two baths later, the smell had abated, but her chipper attitude had not. I asked her how she did it.
“Kid,” she said, “if you’d seen half the s*** that I’ve seen you’d learn to take joy in the simple stuff like I do.”
“That’s kind of salty language for a puppy” I said. “And who are you calling ‘kid’? I’m like 40 years older than you!” But she just gazed at me with those deep dark puppy eyes and I shut my mouth.
“Life is great” she went on. “I literally grew up in a garbage dump. Here I’m warm, I don’t have to fight with the rats for my meals, and now that I don’t smell like cheese anymore I get to cuddle with humans! And if I want a treat, all I have to do is go outside and pee on the grass and you give me one. Easy-peasy. You humans are such pushovers. Peeing on the grass isn’t even hard. I could do it all day. Plus there’s other dogs here and I’m pretty sure I can get them to be friends with me. I can’t wait to have more friends! These other dogs are so much cooler than the garbage rats. Hey, do you want to go outside to the grass?”
I just shook my head as I grabbed the leash and stuffed a bag full of treats in my coat pocket. “Live it up girl.”
“Oh you’d better believe I’m going to live it up” she said over her shoulder as she squatted on the grass. “I believe you have a treat for me now? You want to teach me any other tricks?”
Despite her tough beginnings, Solveig is remarkably friendly and sweet, ready to bring love and joy to her forever home.
Solveig is from a local reservation. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract.
