My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Ronnie, a sweet, shy, and playful cat who is looking for a calm and patient forever home. Ronnie is a quiet and gentle soul, and while she may take a little time to warm up to new people, she’s intelligent and quick to learn, especially when there are treats involved. Over time, she has become more vocal, and now you’ll often hear her trilling or meowing to greet you, especially during mealtimes. She also loves to follow you around the house, curiously observing from a distance, and she enjoys watching the outside world through “cat TV”—whether it`s birds, squirrels, or simply the bustle of the outdoors. When she’s feeling affectionate, Ronnie will gently rub against your legs, and if you`re in another room, she may even call out to you.

Ronnie has a strong love for food, and her daily routine consists of eating half a can of wet food in the morning and the other half in the evening around 8pm. She’s also quite treat-motivated and will come running when she hears the sound of the treat bag being opened. However, one thing to be mindful of is Ronnie`s love for bread—if you leave a loaf on the counter, she will find a way to steal it, so keep it out of reach! She’s very playful, especially with toys, and particularly loves those that are filled with catnip. However, she is not a fan of loud noises or toys with bells, so quieter, simpler toys are best for her.

Ronnie is a pro at using the litterbox, and despite a past dental surgery where three teeth were removed, she’s in good health. The surgery has left her a little drooly, but she’s otherwise doing great. Ronnie also enjoys slow blinking, and she will give you these sweet moments as a sign of affection.

The ideal home for Ronnie is one that is calm and low-stress. She is sensitive to change and will need a stable environment where she can feel safe. Too many new people or excessive foot traffic might cause her to retreat and hide. Her new family will need to respect her boundaries, as Ronnie is not comfortable with being touched or petted, and she may never be. This means that her adopters must be patient, allowing her to come to them on her own terms. Ronnie enjoys having her own space, so she will need a home where she can have a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the household. She can also be a bit excitable during play, so it’s important to recognize when she’s in “hunting mode” to avoid accidental scratches.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

If you are thinking of adopting a cat or kitten, please contact us. Annex Cat Rescue has matched over 1000 cats and kittens with good adoptive homes since our group started!

Annex Cat Rescue cats live in real homes with our foster volunteers -- not in cages! This way, the cats live in normal homes and receive good food and medical care -- and lots of personal attention. We get to know each cat, so we can help you find the best cat for you. It's kind of like a kitty match-making service!

All of our cats are vaccinated, have been de-wormed, and are spayed or neutered once they reach six months of age.

We are always available if you have questions or concerns as your new cat is adjusting to your home.

Here is our adoption process:

  • Please leave a voice mail or email.

  • One of our Adoption Team volunteers will contact you to find out more about the kind of kitty you are looking for. We will suggest which of our cats might be the best match for you, and put you in touch with a few foster homes for you to contact.

  • You can go and visit the cat in the foster home and see if you think it's a match.

  • If you fall in love on the spot (so easy with kitties!) we ask you to go home and think about it overnight, since it's an important decision for you and for the kitty.

  • Then, if it's a match, you can bring your cat carrier (and the adoption fee -- which is modest and does not cover all of our expenses) then take your kitty home! We ask all adopters to sign our adoption agreement, which just sets out some basics so we all understand our roles, with the kitty's best interests first and foremost!

  • A day or two later, we'll call you to make sure all is well and provide any suggestions that might be helpful, if needed.

The Annex Cat Rescue's motto is "Cat Adoption with a Difference." If the adoption does not work out (a rare occurrence, in part due to our excellent "match-making"!), whatever the reason, the cat will always be welcomed back to our organization. We want the best for our kitties!

The Annex Cat Rescue is a grassroots community organization. We are 100% non-paid volunteer-run. Our organization attempts to make a real difference for the homeless, stray and abandoned cats in this city through direct intervention and education. Every day, many people turn to us for help when Toronto Animal Services cannot.

ACR does *not* run an animal shelter. All of our cats/kittens live in volunteer foster homes across Toronto where they are allowed to blossom and grow in a "home" environment (rather than in cages), and where they receive individual attention and love.

While this prevents possible behavioural problems associated with caging animals, this also allows us to get to know each animal intimately and thus we can make excellent matches with adopters. Potential adopters are required to make appointments to view the animals in their respective homes.

Our organization is "no kill". This means that cats in our care remain in foster homes are not euthanized (except for dire humane reasons). City shelters do not have such a policy.

More about this rescue

Cat Adoption with a Difference

The Annex Cat Rescue began as a group of volunteers living primarily in the Annex neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We now have members from all over the city. We share a common bond -- a love of cats and concern for their welfare. We are a non-profit organization and have no government funding.

It is our goal to eliminate cruelty to animals by providing for the fostering and adoption of cats that are homeless, abandoned, or where their owners (through illness, age, or death) can no longer care for them. We try to educate members of our community regarding the proper care of cats and to provide information aimed at reducing the feral, homeless, and abandoned populations. Throughout the year, we assist in the feeding of many feral cat colonies and operate a trap-neuter/spay-return (TNR) program.

Please lend your support to our cause by adopting one of our wonderful cats or by contributing a small donation!

HOW YOU CAN HELP

The success of Annex Cat Rescue depends on the dedication of our volunteers -- not just the foster homes and trappers who work hands-on, but also those who support ACR's rescue work behind-the-scenes. If you, or anyone you know, is interested in becoming a volunteer, or expanding your work within the organization, please apply online.

Please see our website for some ways you can help. Our experienced volunteers are always there to support you, and even a few hours of your time every month can make a big difference.
