Meet Tuna! The unique and resilient orange tabby boy with so much personality! Poor Tuna spent many years as a stray on the street in the cold Chicago winters and he has the scars to show for it. You might notice that his ears are a bit unique. Tuna has “cauliflower ears” (that’s right, like boxers get!) from years of untreated mites and ear infections. Luckily, his ears are now healthy and this is just an aesthetic injury, so he can still hear perfectly! Tuna has been through so much hardship and it’s easy to tell how grateful and happy he is to be a warm and loved indoor cat! He is so social and affectionate; he loves attention and being pet and he will frequently rub up against you to ask for your love. A brave and outgoing boy, Tuna will always be the first to run up to the door and greet you when you get home! If you give this rough and tumble old tomcat a chance, we know you’ll be head over heels in love with him in no time.
Tuna is pretty easy going and he would do well in a busy or calm home environment, as long as he has people around who are will to spend time with him. He can be a little shy at first, but he opens up very quickly and once he trusts you, you’ve got a friend for life! Tuna used to live outside with a colony of cats and he was seen acting affectionately toward some of them, but he did show some food aggression. Since Tuna is now well fed and neutered, it is possible that some of that aggression has subsided. We think Tuna would be able to adjust to a home with a resident cat as long as he is given a slow and supervised introduction. Likewise, he doesn’t have much experience with dogs as far as we know, but we think he could adjust to a calm and kind canine friend as long as he is given a slow and supervised introduction.
For the most part, Tuna is a very low maintenance boy, but he does have one special need that his future family should be aware of. Tuna has cauliflower ears which means the skin of his ears is damaged and folded over, making him appear earless. Due to this mild affliction, it is important that Tuna has his ears cleaned at least once a week, so they don’t become irritated. Luckily, he behaves really well while he is having his ears cleaned, he doesn’t seem to mind it at all! Tuna’s foster mom also finds that rubbing a small amount of coconut oil on his face and ears helps keep his fur soft and helps him avoid itchiness. Tuna enjoys being with people and would do well in a home with people who are home often, but he is also able to entertain himself and he would be fine in a home where people were gone at work or school during the day. He will be waiting at the door to meet you when you get home! Tuna wouldn’t be a great fit for a home with small children, but he could do well with older children as long as they understand cat behavior and respect his boundaries.
This cutie is a kitty who loves to gossip! He is quite the chatterbox and enjoys telling his humans everything about his day. Tuna also loves to follow people around, wondering what they’re up to and asking to be included. He will happily rub up against your legs while chattering at you, just to remind you he’s there! Nothing would make Tuna happier than cuddling and snuggling with people all day. When he looks at you with his loving stare you can see how much pain he's gone through in his past, and how much gratitude he has for the people caring for him. Another favorite pastime of Tuna’s is eating! He is very food motivated and loves treats.
Since he spent so many years on the street, some indoor cat activities are still confusing to Tuna. He is still learning how to play but he shows curiosity about toys! He just needs someone to be patient with him and introduce him to the wide world of cat toy varieties. One thing he doesn’t need any lessons in is cuddling! Tuna loves to snuggle up with people and he can frequently be found curled up in someone’s lap, begging for attention. There’s nothing Tuna loves more than being near people! According to his foster mom, she will miss Tuna following her around everywhere she goes.
Tuna is such a special boy who has survived for six years on the streets, defying all the odds.
