Social, curious, cheerful, adaptable, resilient, and incredibly handsome are just a few words to describe one of our newest rescues, Patches. Patch is a very special senior pup searching for a family as exceptional as he is. He came to Pal's Place from an overwhelmed animal control facility in Kentucky. An animal control facility is scary for almost any dog, but can you imagine how much more so for a senior blind dog? It's no secret that we at Pal's Place have a soft spot for seniors and special needs dogs, especially blind ones. As soon as we saw Patch's sweet face, we committed to welcoming him into our foster program. Our distinguished gentleman's age estimate is 10+ years old, and he weighs just under fifty pounds. We do not know much about his past or how he ended up at the shelter to begin with, but we know his future is bright, and we are committed to finding him the perfect home to spend his golden years in. Patches is entirely blind, but he does not let his disability define him or slow him down one bit! His tail is in constant motion, and his sunny, upbeat, and joyful attitude is contagious. He truly is a delight to be around. Affectionate and friendly by nature, Patch wears his heart on his sleeve. Kisses are freely distributed to all, and despite weighing close to 50 pounds, he identifies as a lap dog and often insists on curling up for a nap on his foster mom's lap.
Patch learned his foster home's layout and mastered the stairs in less than two days. He now independently navigates all the stairs in the three-level home and has no trouble finding his way around all three floors. In unfamiliar environments with stairs, he has learned the word "Step". If he hears that word, he knows there are stairs or a step nearby and will proceed slowly and deliberately, with a bit of guidance from his humans, until he finds them. Patch needs a little patience and encouragement when introduced to new environments, but he's very inquisitive, always eager to learn and explore, and is a quick study! Once he is familiar with an environment, you'd never know he was blind. There is not much a sighted dog can do that a blind dog cannot, and most blind dogs do not need any additional or specialized care other than a bit of guidance in new environments.
Patch loves chewing on bones, cuddling with his canine foster siblings, walkies, and napping in the sun. He is housebroken and well-behaved in the home and is trustworthy with free run of the home when alone. He is generally quiet but can be vocal when he wants or needs something. He will alert you if he needs to go outside, and he will not let you forget a mealtime 🙂 This easy-going, adaptable dude will do well in most environments and be a phenomenal companion for one lucky household.
Patches has painful glaucoma in both eyes, and to provide him with a comfortable and pain-free life, he is scheduled for a double eye enucleation (removal) at the time of his neuter on November 20th. He'll look a bit different than other dogs once his eyes are removed, but he will be pain-free, and that's what matters. Patches also need a dental cleaning and, unfortunately, has also tested positive for heartworm. Thankfully, he's in the early stages of the heartworm infection and symptom-free. He is expected to make a full recovery after treatment. Patch's dental and heartworm treatment will be scheduled once he's fully recovered from his neuter and eye surgery. Patch is available for adoption before his dental and heartworm treatment so he can begin adjusting to his forever home, provided his adopters agree to bring him back to a partner veterinary clinic of Pal's Place for his remaining medical. Pal's Place will cover the dental and heartworm treatment costs, so there is no additional expense to his adopters other than our standard adoption fee of $275 for senior dogs.

Pal's Place is a foster-based canine rescue serving Chicago and surrounding areas. We do adopt out of state, provided potential adopters are willing to make the trip to Chicago to meet the dog in person before adoption. We do not ship or transport our animals. We rescue dogs from euthanasia at overturned and open-intake animal control facilities. They are placed in foster homes, evaluated, and fully vetted before adoption. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, wormed, and vaccinated before being placed for adoption. An adoption application and contract are required. Our adoption fees vary by dog but are generally as follows:
Senior Dogs $275 and up
Adult dogs $375 and up
Puppies (under twelve months) $475 and up
These fees help to cover the expenses of vetting, feeding, and housing the dogs we rescue. We rely solely on donations to continue our work in rescuing needy dogs.
HOW TO ADOPT:

Be sure to fully complete the application and ensure contact information for your veterinarian (if you have current dogs/cats in the home or within the past five years) and/or landlords (if renting) is included. All our dogs are in foster homes or boarding facilities while they await adoption. Dogs can be seen by appointment once the rescue has approved an application. Any information we know about our available dogs is listed in their bios below this information. Please read the dog's bio thoroughly, we will not respond to emailed questions regarding our dogs if the information is already provided in their bio.
• Step 2: A volunteer will do their best to respond to your application within 24-72 hours of submission to schedule a meeting if approved. WE CANNOT HOLD DOGS FOR ANY REASON. The sooner we place a dog into a loving forever home, the sooner we can bring another in desperate need of rescue into our program. Please do not apply unless you are ready to welcome a dog into your home within three days of applying. If you are expecting a response, please check your spam or junk folder, as correspondence from us may end up there. • Step 3: Meet the dog! All adults living in the home must be present at your appointment. If all parties agree the dog is a good match for your home at the time of the visit, be prepared to take your new best friend home with you the same day. We send all our dogs home with a collar, a small bag of the food they have been eating, and their medical paperwork. An adoption contract and disclosure form will be completed at that time, and the adoption fee will be collected (each dog's individual fee is listed in the bio). Adoption fees can be paid via cash, check, Zelle, or PayPal. In the case of litters of puppies, we can no longer hold a particular puppy for visits due to a huge increase in no-shows and last-minute cancelations of meet-and-greet appointments over the past several months. An effort is made to schedule visits with puppies in the order the approved applications were received. Most of our dogs are rescued from high-intake, high-kill shelters in Kentucky.
