My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kika / Female / Approximately 2.5 years old / 60 lbs / Terrier Mix / Good with Dogs / Good with Older Children / Not Tested with Cats / From Mexico / Fostered in Mississauga

Meet Kika! Kika's foster describes her as a very loving girl who adores affection and attention. Kika came to us after she wandered into the home of a volunteer at our partner rescue badly injured and clearly the subject of mistreatment. She was in terrible shape and must have known the right place to come. They say that she rescued herself! Kika loves giving kisses and twisting into weird shapes to sit on your lap (even though she is not really the right size for a lap dog). She never stops giving her people attention. She follows her fosters around the house with a very wiggly bum trying to get pets and scratches. Kika is overcoming her tragic beginning and learning how to be a great companion. She is a very sweet and deserving girl and is eager to find her forever!

After attention and love from her people, Kika's favourite thing is toys. She loves playing by herself and will throw her toys around and chase them down. Her favourites are toys that make loud and preferably obnoxious noises. Once her play time is done, she will lay in the middle of the room and flip herself over when someone walks by in the hopes of getting belly rubs. Kika also enjoys enrichment games and searching for treats hidden around the house.

Kika is still very nervous in the outside world and prefers walks in the early morning or later in the evening when things are quiet. She does not like being approached by strangers and will demand her own space and may react if a stranger crosses her threshold. Kika prefers quieter areas, she does not like busy areas and gets spooked by scooters. Kika can take some time to warm up to new people, especially men, but once she does she is the most affectionate girl.

In the house, Kika has been left alone for several hours in one room of the house with food, water, and toys, and has done well. She is not usually crated and takes a few minutes to settle but is then fine on her own and not destructive. When her people are home she likes being close to them. Kika sleeps through the night on a couch or in her crate without issue. Kika is food motivated and loves to learn new things, though she can be a bit clumsy. She is fully potty trained.

Kika is social with other dogs but prefers calmer, respectful dogs, and appreciates being able to get her own space if she feels overwhelmed. Generally though she seems to find the presence of another dog soothing and we think she would do great in a home with a calm, respectful dog who can reassure her and show her the ropes. Kika has not been tested with cats but may be able to live with a cat. Kika currently lives with two teenage girls who she adores and loves playing with. Kika could live in a home with older kids, aged 12+. The energy and unpredictable nature of smaller kids might be too much for Kika.

Kika's ideal home would be a patient family that can give her time to feel secure and gain her trust. Once she trusts, Kika wants to be with her people all the time. She would love a quiet home where someone is home more often than not. She would do best in a home with mostly females. Kika needs a family who understands her boundaries and is willing to advocate for her space, especially when meeting new people. Kika would do best in a home in a quieter area. Kika is a sweet girl who had an extremely difficult start to life. Kika has been given a new opportunity and is looking to join a very lucky family.

Additional adoption info

To adopt one of our dogs, please fill out an application at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form. Although we do our best to reply to all inquiries within 72 hours, please remember we are a volunteer-run organization. We appreciate your patience.

If we think your application has potential to be a good fit, a Fetch + Releash volunteer will contact you to set up a time to speak over the phone and conduct the home visit. In addition to the phone interview and home visit, we also require personal, veterinarian, and landlord reference if applicable.

After the phone interview, home visit & reference check, you will then be granted a private meet and greet with the dog.

After the meet and greet, the adoption committee will then review your completed application and make a final decision.

More about this rescue

Established in 2016, Fetch + Releash is a volunteer run dog rescue dedicated to saving dogs in need. Our foster dogs come from a variety of different backgrounds such as shelters, strays and surrendered pets, both locally and abroad. Through our network of volunteers, foster homes, trainers and veterinarians, we strive to give every dog the loving forever family they deserve. As a foster-based rescue, our dogs live in private homes across the Greater Toronto Area where they receive the love and attention they need to ready them for adoption.

A dog is a lifetime commitment and not to be discarded due to health, lifestyle change or inconvenience. Some of the top reasons dogs end up in shelters are lack of training, lifestyle changes (i.e. new baby, marriage), relocation, cost of dog ownership, not enough time for pet etc. Our goal is to ensure our adoptive families are well versed in the realities of dog ownership and ready to make a lifetime commitment.
