My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Splinter! Splinter and Charlie Brown are a brother duo who are looking for a home that will be calm and patient with them while getting used to being handled and fully socialized. these two are very curious and love each other and would even love to go home with their other two bothers, Curly and Toast, who are also up for adoption! Call in or come in to learn more about how to adopt these guys today!

Adoption fee for one rat is $12, each additional adopted at the same time has a discounted adoption fee of $8.

Are you looking for a smart, adorable, AND interactive pet!? Well look no further than ME!

Not convinced? Let me tell you a little bit more about rats like myself. When we are happy, we let out a cheerful sound that is similar to laughter! We love being handled and will happily ride around on your shoulders. We are social, active, and love to play with toys. We use our tails to keep us balanced!

Our average lifespan is about 2 years and I promise we'll be your best friend until the end. When you come to visit, watch out- if you poke your finger into our cage we may think it is something yummy and nibble away.

Housing requirements: Most housing sold at pet stores is too small for small pets. They are going to be spending most of their lives inside their cage; your housing must be as large as the below or larger (bigger is always better!) in order to adopt this pet.
- 1-2 rats - 3' x 2' x 2'
- Ferret cages also make an excellent home for rats.
- We recommend solid bottom, powder coated wire cages. The bigger, the better! They love houses with multiple levels connected by ramps.

Rats are a social species, meaning the company of their own kind is critical to their health and well being.
- If there are two names listed together (eg Peanut Butter w/Jelly), that means that the two animals are a bonded pair of friends, and must be adopted together.
- If there are more than two animals listed together (eg Peanut Butter w/Jelly and Toast), the group is to be adopted together. If there are 4 or more listed together, they can be adopted in pairs or trios - we just can't leave a single alone.

Got a single at home you're looking for a friend for? Any rat listed alone on our website is a single and a great candidate; if there is a group of 3 or more, usually one can be taken out of that group as a companion for your single.
- Rat friends must be same sex, unless your current single is already neutered.
- A new friend will need a separate cage until friendship has been established

If you're ready to adopt now and want to learn more about, meet, or adopt this pet, you can start the process in one of two ways:

Come on in during open adoption hours Tuesday - Saturday 12:30-3:00! For in-shelter pets (not in foster care) coming in ASAP is the fastest way to adopt.

**the below two methods are slower than visiting us**
Call us (413-781-4000 x 1) or email us (springfield@dakinhumane.org) for more information about a pet. We are often on the line with another client, but we return voice mail and emails within 24 hours.
