My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello world! I'm here with my siblings and taking up snuggy space until you adopt me.

My needs post adoption will include a trip to vet for my rabies vaccine and one booster vaccine. Plus, you have to neuter me when I'm grown up and ready! You'll be able to get some of your adoption fee back when that happens!

Our goal is to make the best choice possible to ensure the animals’ health, safety and happiness. We also want our adopters to be able to make an informed choice and adopt the animal that is the best fit for their family.

More about this shelter

Heartland Humane Society is a Private NonProfit 501(c)3 organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. We are limited admissions facility - meaning we that we take in animals by appointment and only when appropriate space and resources are available to care for them.

As a non-profit we rely 100% on private donations. We generate funds through your generous contributions, adoption fees, fundraising events, and sales of merchandise and services. All funds collected go directly back to the general budget to care for our animals.

HHS was established in 2006 from a group formerly known as the Yankton Area Humane Society. We serve Yankton and Clay counties primarily with an additional twelve-county area often receiving our services.

All of our animals receive proper vet care, including vaccinations and prevention of common pet diseases and infections. We test for Heartworm in our canines and feline leukemias in our felines. We contract with local vets to perform all surgeries and animal care at our facility. Each animal is microchipped and all animals old enough are fixed before being placed up for adoption.

In 2014, Heartland moved its operation to our forever home on Highway 50, allowing the shelter to double the number of animals it serves annually.

HHS again doubled its numbers in 2017 by opening an additional 4,000 square feet of facility at the shelter. At full operations, the shelter will be able to serve up to 850 animals each year.

Our shelter, now officially remodeled, boasts 19 kennels on our adoption floor plus four quarantine kennels and five kennels for our holding facility. We have 18 cat kennels on our adoption floor plus two community cat rooms where folks can snuggle with adoptable cats. We also have 16 quarantine cat kennels plus four kennels in our holding facility.

Volunteers have access to both an inside and outside play yard for our dogs and cat volunteers have their own room for socializing our felines. Our lobby also includes a merchandise area with top quality cat and dog products.

Come visit us today and learn more - 3400 E Highway 50 / Yankton, SD. We provide tours by appointment.
