My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

One day, Edgar wandered down the road of one of our southern rescue partners. It was his lucky day! He was extremely thin and hesitant to come to his would-be rescuer, but food won him over. It took less than 5 minutes to entice him close enough to get a lead on him. He did not resist once the lead was put over his head. He was happy to jump in and ride in the truck to his new life. He has since gained 20 pounds.

Edgar is still hesitant to come to freely to humans, and getting a leash on him is still not easy. He is learning to trust, and his foster has learned that he is more willing to come near if he sits and lets Edgar come to him. Once he comes near and the foster can touch him, Edgar doesn’t resist.

Edgar is not house-trained yet, but he is kennel-trained. When it’s time to come in, His foster opens the door and stands out of the way. Edgar will run right past his foster to get to his kennel. He looks forward to the snake toy he knows is waiting inside.

He gets along great with other dogs. His regular playmate is a female German Shepherd mix. He has not lived with children, and due to his hesitancy with humans, older children over age 12 would be best.

He will need a patient family willing to continue to work with Edgar and teach him about living in a home and trusting humans. He is very treat and toy-motivated and has come so far already.

More about this rescue

PAWS is comprised of a small group of volunteers from New England and Tennessee trying to reduce the euthanization rate (previously 90%) at the Tipton County Animal Control shelter in Brighton, Tennessee. This shelter is forced to euthanize thousands of animals each year due to irresponsible pet owners that do not spay/ neuter their dogs in the area. Millions of dogs in America are euthanized each year due to lack of space and lack of funding to try and find them better homes.

Our mission is to save as many animals as possible, removing them from the shelter, having their veterinary needs met prior to traveling and then finding them loving homes throughout New England. We do this only with the assistance of many people volunteering their time by going to the shelter, transporting the dogs to the vet, fostering dogs who need special care, and arranging for their new and happy homes in this area. Most importantly, we cannot do any of this without those people willing to open their homes and hearts to these lovely creatures.
