My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ho ho ho! It’s me, Santa, but no—I`m not here to bring you presents (unless you count endless love, tail wags, and the occasional drool as `presents`). I`m a 2-year-old, medium-sized, scruffy-faced cuddle machine, just waiting to slide down your chimney and settle into your life. I’m super chill—no crazy reindeer antics here. I’m laidback, calm, and totally cool with hanging out all day. Need a buddy for walks? I’m your guy. I walk like a pro on a leash (no pulling or embarrassing moments). Want to play fetch? I’m happy to oblige, though I can’t promise I’ll fetch it every time—I’m a dog, not a robot. But I’ll always fetch the love, that’s for sure! I love everyone—humans and dogs. Treats? Oh yes, I’m absolutely treat-obsessed. Give me a biscuit, and I’m your best friend for life (I mean, I was already your best friend, but a treat makes me extra loyal). At the end of the day, I’m all about snuggles and quiet time. My scruffy face will rest gently on your lap, and I’ll look at you like you’re the most amazing human in the world. So, if you’re looking for a sweet, gentle guy who’s just as content chilling as he is going for daily walks or playing around the yard, I’m your Santa. And I promise, unlike the real Santa, I won’t eat your cookies (unless you’re into sharing). Love, Santa P.S. I’m totally cool with island life, but if you’re on the mainland, I’ll fly there with bells on (figuratively—no actual bells required). Schedule a meet and greet today or walk in anytime from 12 pm - 4 pm except for Thursdays.

More about this shelter

The Kauai Humane Society was established by the community in 1952 as a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to protect Kauai’s animals. We opened our current home just west of Lihue in 2001 thanks to the generous support of many individuals, families, businesses and foundations. We are an independent animal welfare organization and not a chapter of any mainland or Hawaii group.

The Kauai Humane Society(KHS) is the only physical animal shelter in Kauai County, Hawaii. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a government contract to allow KHS to provide services to Kauai County for humane field services for cats and dogs.

Our facility does not turn away any sick or injured cat or dog found on Kauai. We strive to not euthanize any healthy, adoptable, and/or treatable animals for space or treatable medical reasons.

In 2022, for the year overall, KHS achieved a Live Release Rate of 94.4%; meaning 94.4% of the animals that came into KHS during 2022 were released with a positive outcome of being adopted, returned to the owner, or transferred to a rescue group.
