My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello, I’m Basil. Yes, like the herb. No, I don’t smell like it.

I’m a 2-year-old grey and white cat who prefers the quiet life. Parties? No thanks. Guests? I’ll pass. My hobbies include watching you from a safe distance, hiding in places you didn’t even know existed, and pretending I’m a decorative throw pillow when people visit.

I’m not what you’d call “the life of the party,” but if you’re looking for a loyal roommate who doesn’t hog the TV remote or talk during movies, I’m your girl. Just don’t expect me to open up right away—winning my trust is like unlocking a secret level in a video game. Patience is key.

Once we’re cool, though, you’ll find I’m a soft, sweet soul who just wants a cozy spot by the window and a human who respects my introverted vibes. Adopt me, and I’ll teach you the fine art of lounging. Deal?

More about this shelter

We are the Jefferson County Humane Society and , except for our humane officers (who are paid very nominally), we are all volunteers! Our members were instrumental in getting a local levy passed to build a new and larger shelter and the doors opened in 2011. We are currently participating in Iams Home for the Holidays Program and the Purina Pets for People grant program. We are actively pursuing other grants and recently have been asked by the county to partner with them in the operation of the new shelter. Since we are a humane society, our main focus is on getting animals spayed and neutered so there are no more homeless pets. To that end, we bring in a mobile animal surgical clinic who performs spays and neuters at a reduced rate. We are always looking for volunteers to help us in our efforts and, of course, for financial contributions (we are a non-profit, 501 (c)3) and pet adopters! Other items such as food, treats, pet carriers, cages, leashes, collars, food bowls, etc. are also ALWAYS welcomed and appreciated. Please contact us if you have an item to be donated or would like to volunteer with us to try to save some of these homeless, but very loveable, dogs!
