Kal-El came to us as a stray on 9/11/2024. He is very sweet and affectionate with people he trusts, just a bit mouthy and jumps. He barks a lot when meeting new people unless done correctly. If we play fetch outside while he`s meeting a new person and give him treats, he`s pretty relaxed and even lets them peacefully come inside in his space downstairs.
We have two cats, and he has a high prey drive, which is why we can`t keep him. He would do best in a home with no children or other animals. He is a bit reactive to our neighbor`s dogs, but he`s probably never been socialized the right way. I don`t know how to properly assess him for his ability to be with other animals, and I don`t know how to teach him to socialize safely with other dogs. He does fine if he sees other dogs on walks from a distance, but he stares at small dogs in a concerning way, probably because of his prey drive.
He hasn`t met any children during his time with us. He has not reacted to the few kids he`s seen pass in front of the house or that we`ve passed from a distance on walks. When I found him, he had a UTI, an ear infection, and an allergic rash. He is still recovering from all three, although the UTI is almost completely gone. He was skinny and only 45lbs when I found him. He is back to a healthy weight of 55lbs.
He is currently taking daily paw baths with a medicated shampoo to treat his allergic rashes. He is very comfortable with that as long as he eats treats/kibble off the ground. He is on a prescription diet from the vet for his UTI. It`s Hill`s Prescription Diet for Urinary Care c/d. We don`t know of any triggers for his allergies so we`re not sure what`s causing his rash or if it`s a response to something in his diet.
Kal-El is very good about not going to the bathroom inside unless he`s not feeling well. Sometimes he is too distracted by squirrels to focus en
