My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

***Currently located in Seattle, WA***

Hi
I am Cloud and together with my sis Cotton and our mom Stormy we are the Sky-Litter. Our early days were a bit chaotic, but thanks to some amazing humans, we are here today to tell you our story.

We were born into uncertainty in a small village  in Mexico. Our first home wasn't much more than a sheltered area on the dirty ground but it was the best our previous caretaker could do. Our memories of this time are a bit foggy as we were so young we were still nursing from our mom. All we remember is being whisked away by some gentle humans and boy what a turn life took!

We were excited to have a fresh start, but we weren’t feeling well and were soon diagnosed with distemper. It was a scary time, being sick and not fully understanding what was happening. Hospital stays and medications became our new normal, but we never lost hope! Thanks to the support of a sponsor and the dedication of our rescuers, we made it through and are proud survivors

Now, we are healthy, energetic pups with hearts full of gratitude. We have a zest for life that no storm can dampen. We may have started small (and we may still be small in stature ), but we are dreaming big! We are ready to find furever families who will cherish us as much as we will them

I am a bit timid when you first meet me and you will need some patience to gain my trust, but once I open up, I am the querkiest spunkiest and cuddliest little girl! I promise to shower you with love, I always want to be close by you and I am a good listener (especially with some treat bribes ). After some training at the volunteer house to work on trust and bonding, I was able to learn that the crate means no harm. Now I walk in right away for meal time or at night and I don't mind it at all anymore to be in an enclosed space. Of course, I would prefer to sleep on the bed beside you - I told you, I dream big!

Other dogs, not too big breeds or puppies, make the best play buddies in my opinion, even though I can also play very well on my own with a toy (make sure to put the cables away, I've grown fond of them and apparently am not allowed to chew on them ). I have lots of energy and like to jump around, keeping up with the big dogs with no problem! In a quiet neighborhood I would love to go on walks as well. If you have a yard where I can have the zoomies and play with a friend, I would also be very happy!

I cannot wait to meet you and show you what a wonderful pup I am!
Love, your Cloud

From my foster mom:

Cloud is a sweet dream! This snuggly chihuachshund (*we made this word up) is a shy girl who, when I let her set the pace for half a day without forcing her boundaries, quickly trusted me. The reward for our patience has been the cutest, happiest pittery-pattery bouncing house shadow we've ever seen!

Cloud loves to jump up on the couch for snuggles, placing her sweet head on you as often as possible or, even better, assuming 'little spoon' position. She gives nose boops, non-slobbery kisses, and gazes adoringly-but-not-needily at you.

Cloud is great with our dog and cat and, though sensitive, quickly adapted to our dog's daily playdates (so long as she could still see or get to me for comfort).

Cloud is super smart, catching on to potty training and the house schedules immediately. She loves being outside or on leash; though she currently pulls, especially toward squirrels, she will no doubt be a fast study.

One of our favorite things about Cloud is watching this little girl go down stairs like a real-life slinky! It's truly a must see!

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
