Doug is an incredibly goofy, loyal dog that does not realize how big he really is. He wants to lay on the couch or in your lap, and be by your side at all times. He doesn’t love long walks and will try to guide you home to the couch, but if made to take a longer walk- he is a good sport and will walk nicely on a leash and obey commands to sit next to you if other dogs or neighbors pass by. He is grateful to have been given a second chance at life after nearly not making it from becoming very sick from a corn cob obstructing his intestines (which required surgery to remove!). He is kennel trained and has never had an accident in the house, however he would love to live in a home where he can hang out by his owners side as much as possible, or lounge in the sun in a fenced yard or patio area. He is capable of obeying commands like sit, shake, down, wait; but needs a strong consistent voice to work with him because he can become a little too excited to listen sometimes. His default position is to lean against his favorite person or sit right at their feet to wait for commands or to get head pats. He plays with toys gently so far (I can take toys away to play fetch or play tug-of-war) but needs some less easy to destroy toys! Doug gets extremely excited around food because he was once malnourished and starving, so he needs a little extra patience and guidance around meal times. He will sit, shake and lay down and wait for the command that he is allowed to eat. Considering his tough background Doug is well behaved, very affectionate, and patient as he waits for his furever home. He makes new friends everywhere he goes and would be forever loyal and a best friend to the right person!
