My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Pekoe!

This girl has had some big changes in her life in the last few weeks, and is taking some time to settle in to her new space. Pekoe came to us when her previous guardian sadly had to go over seas for an extended period of time.

Sweet Pekoe is a special case, which to be honest is one of our favourites here at the West Van SPCA. Pekoe is a big girl with an even bigger personality, and she's not afraid to show it. She seems to pick favourites with her humans, some can do a lot more touch and pets than others. If Pekoe does not want to be touched, she will be honest with a grumble or a swat to tell you "no thanks!". When Pekoe likes you, she will weave around your legs purring and rubbing her chin on your feet and legs. We know that Pekoe will NOT tolerate being picked up and held, but she will stare at you lovingly from the other side of the couch.

Pekoe has been described by many as grumpy, but we see something special in her. Sure, she isn't a cuddle bug that crawls all over you, but she is funny and sweet in her own ways. Pekoe is considered "Special Needs" because she has previously had pancreatitis and now needs a low fat diet to stop that from flaring up. This will also help with her weight loss journey!

As someone who works with Pekoe, I love going in to see her in the morning. I can usually see her fluffy toes sticking out from her sleeping spot, and she will spring out of hiding to come say hi to me. She absolutely loves to be baby-talked to, and will melt with compliments about how beautiful and perfect she is. Although she doesn't want me to touch her all over, she enjoys pets and trails behind me while I tidy her room.

Come see why we love this unique girl! Visits are 12pm-3pm daily (except Mondays when we're closed) OR apply online!

The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia. Through its locations and operations across the province the BC SPCA provides emergency medical care and sheltering for more than 37,000 animals each year. The society also conducts more than 4,600 cruelty investigations and provides a wide range of advocacy and education programs for domestic, farm and wild animals through its Provincial Office.

Our mission, vision and charter is at the heart of all we do to rescue, protect and care for animals. It is also the driving force behind our animal welfare and education programs.

Our Charter:

The BC SPCA Charter is the foundation that guides the work we do:

Whereas:

The world is inhabited by many species sharing a common ecosystem of air, earth, and water. We recognize and value our interconnectedness with all animals.

Therefore:

The BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for the animals of the world we share.

We pledge our energies to inspire and mobilize society to create a world in which all animals, who depend on humans for their well-being, experience, as a minimum, five essential freedoms:

1. Freedom from hunger and thirst

2. Freedom from pain, injury, and disease

3. Freedom from distress

4. Freedom from discomfort

5. Freedom to express behaviours that promote well-being.
