11/14/24 Update: Vikter was adopted into a home for a few days for a home trial period. It became apparent that he had some separation anxiety that the family tried working through but weren't able to safely house him while they needed to be away from their home. We are glad to have learned this about Vikter as this is great information to share with any future adopter(s) and definitely something that will require patience and consistency.
Vikter is an 8 month old German Shorthair Pointer puppy that was surrendered to Safe Haven because his family had some unexpected issues that made it difficult to give Vikter the home they know he needs. This family got him from a breeder in southern Iowa when he was 6 months old and they loved him dearly for the two months that he lived with them. Vikter loves everyone he meets, but tends to bond easily and deeply with women. He was raised around kids and other dogs, and would love a nice active family that will take him on long walks, and that has a big yard for him to frolic in.
Vikter's family say that he has the best tempermant, is very athletic, easy to train, and could possibly be a great hunting buddy because he innately points when he sees different wildlife. Vikter loves to be around his family, going on walks, and chewing on bones! His family report that he did not like kennel training - and will bark/whine when kenneled or left alone, so some patience and work is still needed in that area. If left unattended Vikter loves to counter surf and will find other inappropriate ways to entertain himself like most puppies will do. These puppy antics, as well as his barking and high energy needs must be something his next family is comfortable working through and helping him mature into the great companion he undoubtably can become!
Therefore as a puppy, Vikter is going to need a family committed to helping him with all the things a puppy needs - establishing a routine to set him up for success with housetraining, obedience training, daily exercise and mental stimulation, as well as proper socialization.
