My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We are a Cairo Spiny Mouse!

Adoption fee for one mouse is $10, each additional adopted at the same time has a discounted adoption fee of $5.

Unlike many pet mice, spiny mice are a surprisingly long-lived pet rodent. They have an average lifespan of around 2-5 years - some species of spiny mice can even live up to 7 years!

They also have inflexible prominent hair fibers on their dorsal skin - gives them the cool spikey hair look!

As well as being super interesting, we're also super adorable. We like to tuck ourselves into small places- give us a box to hide in and we'll fluff up our bedding into a soft nest. Mice like me eat all kinds of things! You should buy us a seed mix from the pet store and then as a treat you can give us small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Housing requirements: 20 gallon aquarium with wire mesh cover

Spiny mice are notoriously good chewers, so it's recommended that you house them in a well-ventilated tank. As they're brilliant gnawers, climbers, and jumpers, you can provide them with plenty of gnawing materials such as wooden houses, tunnels, nests, climbing frames and more - they tend to utilize most enrichment items.

It is always recommended to get the largest size you can afford.

Mice typically escape from any cage with bars.

Mice are a social species, meaning the company of their own kind is critical to their health and well being.

If there are two names listed together (eg Peanut Butter w/Jelly), that means that the two animals are a bonded pair of friends, and must be adopted together.

Got a single at home you're looking for a friend for? Any mouse listed alone on our website is a single and a great candidate; if there is a group of 3 or more, usually one can be taken out of that group as a companion for your single.

Mouse friends must be same sex, unless your current single is already neutered. Unneutered male mice who are singles will not appreciate another male mouse friend. Male mice usually only get along if they grow up together.

A new friend will need a separate cage until friendship has been established.

If you're ready to adopt within the next 24-48 hours and want to learn more about, meet, or adopt this pet, you can start the process by completing ALL of the following steps:
1. Click on the pink "Adopt me" button to submit an adoption inquiry
2. Watch your email for a response from us!
3. Your email will have a link - use the link to schedule an adoption counseling call with us, where we'll answer your questions and review the pet's information with you!
4. Please email us about your housing for this pet before your phone call. Send a photo of your housing as well as its dimensions to springfield@dakinhumane.org. Please ensure the housing meets the minimum requirements outlined here. Bigger is always better when it comes to small pet housing!

**Adoption inquiries are not holds or reservations. Pets are adopted by the first person we talk with who is a good match for the pet's needs. Multiple inquiries are accepted for each pet.
If the pet you are inquiring about has already been adopted when we call you for your adoption counseling phone call, we'll be happy to take a look at our other adoptables, and see if someone else may be a perfect match for you!**
