Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
Chinchillas are shy, active, and adorable rodents. Many chinchillas do not like being held or handled. Instead, they prefer exploring and climbing. As such, they are more suitable pets for adults rather than children. Chinchillas are mostly nocturnal animals, which means they are active at night. Due to their thick fur, they are susceptible to overheating. They must be kept in a 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit environment. In their cage, Chinchillas enjoy exercise wheels, chew toys, nest/shelter, hay feeder, bath house, and food and water dishes. Chinchillas mainly eat timothy hay and a small amount of pellets. Fresh fruits and veggies can be offered occasionally as a treat. Chinchillas do not bathe in water but instead take dust baths to maintain their soft, thick coat. Chinchillas can live alone but do better in pairs of the same sex. With proper care, chinchillas can live for 10-20 years.

More about this shelter
We are an open admissions shelter, meaning we take in homeless animals regardless of age, breed, health, temperament or lack of space. On average, we take in about 5,500 stray, surrendered and abandoned animals per year including dogs, cats, small mammals, birds and reptiles. We provide adoption services to find safe, happy homes for these pets; and also provide low-cost vaccination and microchip clinics to help safeguard them against illness or being lost forever.
