My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Maple lives up to her name- like a good maple syrup, she's sweet at the core but can sometimes take a bit of time to get to the good stuff! Maple is definitely overwhelmed in the shelter environment but has shown her sweet side when she gets 1 on 1 with her handlers. With a little love and attention, we know this girl will thrive!

Maple is now available for adoption at ACCT Philly. You can meet her any day from 10am-6pm.

Behavior:
Per Volunteer 11/19/24:
Maple was a bit timid when I first approached her kennel and seemed hesitant of me. When I opened the door she had pretty loose body language and allowed leashing easily. Pulls on leash a bit to get out of the kennels but pretty good on leash otherwise when walking outside! Calmly sniffed all the toys when we got to the play yard, didn’t come to me much. Likes treats and takes them very gently! Took some pets from me but not overly affectionate and her body language wasn’t loose enough to seem like she was enjoying it. No issues returning

Per Staff 11/18/24:
Went in behavior room to visit with Maple while she was out stretching her legs. Although Maple seems a little withdrawn, she was tolerant of everyone coming in/out of the room & allowed for pets on her head & body. She stayed close to her handler sometimes leaning in or hiding behind her back. Maple trembles a little bit but again, showed no signs of aggression or intolerance. She is very quiet and laid back. Other staff brought in Sushi to meet her. Maple did a lot of sniffing and was very tolerant of Sushi sniffing her & going up to her nose. She seems a little nervous and unsure of her surroundings but overall a nice dog

Per Staff 11/18/24:
Took Maple out today to see how she is doing and to see if she could be made available. When I approached her in kennel she was curled up asleep. I called to her and she popped off her bed and charged the front at me with fast mid level wags, hard barking and wide eyes. She remained at the front and continued to bark and wag while I leashed her. Exited easily without issue. Once in the room with her she was pretty stiff and focused on the door. She was tolerant to handling when I touched her initially but would flatten her ears and remain stiff. When a male staff member entered the room she was calm towards him but remained aloof and uninterested in interaction. She then came back over and sat by me once he left. She remained focused on the door but her body language softened and she closed her eyes as I pet her head and back. She did not lean in but if I stopped she would glance up at me with semi soft eye contact. I had another staff member enter the room because I wanted to see how she would do now that she was a bit more comfortable. She did well with the new handler entered.

Per Staff 11/17/24:
Super cute! When I walked by her kennel she was curled up and had a treat on her back. She then turned her head and ate it. She was quiet in kennel and didn't get up.

Per Staff 11/14/24:
BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:

KNOWN HISTORY:

Stray

KENNEL PRESENTATION:

Maple was laying down by her bed and looked up with hard wide eye contact and did some alert barks when the handler opened the door. She was spooked by the leash so the handler lowered the divider. She continued to alert bark and the handler was able to lasso her with the leash.

LEASH SKILLS:

Pulls minimally

HANDLING:

In the room Maple was nervous and avoidant. She sniffed around on leash ignoring both handlers and when trying to call to her or offer food she would hard stare and continue to pace. She was very fearful in the room and nervous to interact or trust us at all. She did allow some light handling on her head and back but remained tense, wide eyes, and trembling. I didn’t want to push her too much so I took things very slow. Making rescue only for now due to levels of fear and minimal handling, but re eval in a couple days.
