Surviving a puppy mill is a hard obstacle for most dogs to overcome. It has a lasting effect on their learning and behavoir. Little changes throw them. It takes the longer to adjust and get comfortable with everyday things that most dogs take in stride. Lily is a survivor. She hasn’t had the comforts other dogs enjoy. But she has a wonderful, gentle spirit. She is now learning to appreciate the love and attention she deserves. Her first night with us was fun watching her discover all the strange things in her new environment. She seemingly has never seen a cat before. She was shocked to find four very friendly ones in her new room. She barked at them at first but showed no aggression towards them. Once they proved to be no threat, she was fine having them rub all over her. She walks well on a leash, but unexpected noises easily spook her. She has not had much human contact and didn’t understand pets and hugs from us. But by the end of the the first evening, she was curled up on the couch beside me, letting me scratch her head.
She absolutely must have a securely fenced in yard to play in. She is very much a flight risk. She’s also still a puppy and has had no basic training that I can tell. But she very smart and seems eager to learn. She’s been going on puppy pads and when I take her out. She’s had a couple of accidents but kept her kennel clean and neat all night. And she was quiet and well behaved all night as well.
She met SAAP alum Tilly and loved her, tail up and wagging as hard as she could. So a dog friend would be perfect for her.
