My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Charcoal, the big-hearted chonk who’s looking for a patient and understanding home! This handsome hunk is tolerant of handling and appreciates a calm, gentle approach. Charcoal gets excited over squeaky toys and will happily trade for treats (tossed treats work best for his enthusiasm!).

Though he’s not one to seek out affection just yet, Charcoal shows potential to open up with time, trust, and a little patience. He’s a quiet and independent pup who would thrive in a home that lets him go at his own pace.

If you’re ready to give Charcoal the safe, loving space he needs to shine, he’s ready to be your loyal companion!

Eligible for rescue, foster, and adoption. Meet Charcoal at ACCT Philly any day of the week from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Behavioral:

During behavioral evaluation on 11/13 Staff noted: “Charcoal was sitting by door of the kennel and glanced up at the handler with neutral eyes, tail wags. He was easy to leash and exited without any issues. Pulled moderately, housebroken. In the room Charcoal was stressed and was panting heavily, pacing around the room marking. He did not show much interest in interacting with us but was fine if we approached him. He was tolerant to handling but never leaned in or solicited and at times with too much handling would stiffen and lip lick. Snatchy when taking treats so tossing them is best. He had no interest in play but did accept trades for toys and would get very excited over squeaky toys.”

During intake on 11/12 Staff noted: “Unable to give Bordetella due to behavior at intake. Tried to snap at vaccine several times.”

During Intake on 11/12 Owner noted: “He has generally good behavior, is a good dog, friendly and likes to sleep a lot. He is friendly with children and good with other dogs. He is mostly housebroken, has medium energy and pulls on the leash.”
Medical:

During exam on 11/12 Staff noted: “Charcoal was bright, alert, responsive. He was a little reactive to shots, tried to snap a few times. Charcoal’s eyes were clear, ears were a little dirty and his teeth/gums had moderate to severe staining and cavities. He had dandruff all over.”

Our animal control officers provide service over 142.6 square miles to the city’s more than 1.5 million residents and ACCT Philly’s facility in North Philadelphia handles more than 17,000 of the city’s animals, from dogs and cats, to small animals, reptiles, birds and wildlife, annually.

In addition to animal control and sheltering, ACCT Philly is open 365 days a year for pet adoptions. ACCT Philly also supports a foster care program where community members provide temporary homes for sheltered animals and one of the (if not THE) most extensive rescue partnership program in the country where approved rescue partners accept ACCT Philly animals into their adoption programs.
