My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Gracie is one of the sweetest cats we’ve met, a true gentle giant. She loves humans and wants to be around them. She is very talkative! Gracie is in a foster home with both cats and dogs, but seems to come around quicker to the dogs than the cats

Gracie was surrendered due to her humans developing allergies. When she came to us, she had a lot of tight matting along her chest and belly. After a good grooming session, she was good as new! Her new owners will need to dedicate time and money to her coat to ensure she doesn’t get mats anymore. This will include daily brushing and trips to a professional groomer every few months.

Additional adoption info

Thank you for considering a dog or cat from the King George Animal Rescue League. Filling out an application is the first step in our application process.

Requirements for adopting puppies

Puppies are cute and silly and people love them, but they are a big responsibility. When you adopt a puppy, you are responsible for molding him or her into a well-mannered adult dog. In order to set our puppies up for the best future possible, we have a couple of special requirements for those that want to adopt. First, we require that puppies (under 12 months of age) attend a basic obedience or puppy class within 30 days of being adopted. Socialization and training is extremely important, and learning at a young age will help the puppy grow into a wonderful companion in their new home. One of the biggest reasons that people give for surrendering a pet is obedience issues. Attending a class with your new puppy will make both of your lives easier and will help you bond with your new pack member! Additionally, we require that adopters live within 90 miles of King George, Virginia. The reason for this is that we like to be close to the puppies we adopt out, so if issues arise, we can easily send a volunteer to your home to try to help or lend advice.

Adoption process

Once your application is received, the application process begins. We will review your application, check your references, check with your vet (if there are other animals in the household), speak to a landlord (if you rent), and arrange for a home visit. Sometimes, due to the distance involved, we will either have another rescue organization do the home visit, or we will accept digital photos of your home (inside and out) and yard, at our discretion.

Submitting an application does not guarantee a specific dog or cat. We strive to match the personality and needs of our foster dogs and cats to a family who will best fulfill those needs. If a family is not approved for a particular pet, it does not mean they will not be a good pet owner, it just means that their needs and the needs of the particular pet don’t match. We do not adopt on a “first come, first serve” basis.

Please note that we do not do same day adoptions. If you are applying for a popular animal (such as puppies, small dogs, or special breeds), it can take 7-10 days for our volunteers to reach a decision that is best for the animal.

Once your application is approved, the adopter will then be asked to come to meet their potential family member at a location convenient to the foster family. If all is acceptable to both adopter and KGARL, the adopter will be asked to sign the final paperwork and we will collect the adoption fee. At this time, you can either pick up your pet, or schedule a time to do so. You should schedule an appointment with your veterinarian of choice within 72 hours of taking your new pet home.
