Happy New Year! You know how sometimes your Christmas gift is the wrong color? Or maybe it’s the wrong size? You save the receipt, and you return it to the store. I wasn’t someone’s Christmas present, but I was adopted right before Thanksgiving, and now, it’s just after New Years, and here I am, back at the shelter. I’m Sammy, a 1-year-old orange tabby boy with a white spot on my chest. I had been found in SW Rochester back in late October, but my rescuers couldn’t keep me because they already had a cat, so they brought me to Paws and Claws. After I was adopted, I thought I had my forever home, but the resident cat and I had some difficulties, so anyway… I’m a sweet, affectionate boy who loves people. I like being held. I like playing with toys too. I also love to eat! I can’t explain what happened with that other cat. Cats have different personalities, and we tend to be territorial. It takes time to get used to each other, and we need to be introduced slowly. Some of us do better as only cats. I’m a people cat, and if you’re looking for a loving cat to keep you company, I hope you’ll spend time getting to know Sammy.

Paws and Claws Humane Society (PCHS) is a non-profit, mostly volunteer organization that rescues and shelters homeless cats and dogs until they can be adopted into their “forever” homes. We want our clients to understand that adopting and animal is a lifetime responsibility and commitment to that animal.
All prospective adopters must show (at the time of adoption) a valid drivers license or other acceptable identification to verify their name, address, and age. Adopters must be 18 yrs of age. Children under the age of 12 years old need to be present at time of viewing shelter cats or dogs.
After submitting an application, there is generally a processing period of 1-3 days in order to complete all pre-adoption checks and paperwork before an adopter may take possession of the animal.

Paws and Claws Humane Society is committed to partnering with the community to shelter, protect, and seek adoptive homes for abandoned or lost companion animals.
We have served Southern Minnesota for over 30 years and we are the largest shelter in the 8 surrounding counties that does not limit the length of stay for the animals in its care.
Paws & Claws is funded completely on donations and fundraising events and receives no federal, state, county or city funds.We currently have nearly 900 dues paying members.
Paws & Claws has a community fund to help pay for the spaying and neutering of companion animals for those who cannot afford it.
We give over 40 tours and presentations annually, educating the public [including over 400 children] about proper animal care and the importance of spaying and neutering companion animals to help control the pet population in Southern Minnesota.
We have over 110 families that participate in the Guardian Angel Program [sponsoring animals] each month.
Paws & Claws will take in an injured animal and get the emergency medical care that it requires.
Local veterinarians in and around Rochester help Paws & Claws by providing over 145 free spay or neuters each year.
In a typical year the shelter will facilitate adoptions and provide care for over 600 dogs and cats.
