This helps Doxie By Proxy Rescue, Inc. with pet care costs.
Meet Topaz, named for his bright blue eyes and the November birthstone -- a 1.5 to 2 year old double dapple chiweenie! Topaz is only about 10 lbs. but he would tell you it is the perfect lap size! Here is a bit more about the kind of home we are seeking for this adorable boy.
First, it is important to understand that Topaz is deaf and vision impaired (though he can see, just likely not very well and he likely will go blind earlier than most). Neither of those things slow Topaz down one bit - in fact, it makes him keenly aware of his surroundings. Because of his deafness -- Topaz does not bark BUT he will literally scream when you leave him (because of this, we recommend that he not go to an apartment dwelling). He does settle down but he is not happy about it and would prefer a home that is with him most of the time. Topaz is what we call a velcro baby -- he will follow you to the bathroom to keep you company, insist on being in your lap any time you are sitting and will sleep glued to you. You will, in fact, be his entire world. It is easy to understand when you hear what this sweet boy came from...
Topaz came from a home that likely bred him for his coat coloration then dumped him at the shelter when he outgrew being a "cute" puppy that could be sold. This particular home has dumped 2 others at the shelter that we previously took into our rescue in 2022 and we suspect a 3rd one was also from the same home. That home was not kind to these babies and they call came covered in fleas and malnourished. So now that Topaz has found the good life, he would prefer to keep it that way.
Here are a few things you should know about the perfect home for Topaz:
Older children (8+ years) might be okay as long as they are gentle and understanding. We believe really young kids might be a bit too much for Topaz's level of comfort.
Will need work on house training. He has never known love like this before so he needs a little extra patience.
Topaz LOVES to get up on tables. We know - not ideal - but we assume that it was his only way to perhaps feel safe in his former home. He doesn't chew or destroy anything - just likes to feel high up.
Topaz literally wants to be touching you any time you are available. He will even sit on your feet if he cannot get in your lap or up on the table to touch you that way! Topaz truly needs someone looking for full-time puppy companionship. The BENEFIT here is that Topaz is extremely quiet when you are home and if you work from home he promises not to interject in your meetings and will sit quietly for hours as long as it is with you.
Topaz does not yet know how to walk on a leash and harness but we are working on it. He will definitely go anywhere that is with his person, so we expect an easy adjustment. Topaz has been in crates before but he will scream either way. Do not worry, he will settle down but he will definitely miss you while you are gone.
Topaz is deaf so he sometimes startles at fast movements or new people. He is never aggressive and always curious but sometimes going slow with new introductions helps him adjust faster.
Topaz MUST sleep in the big bed with you because he honestly would probably scream through the night if he couldn't be with you. Topaz is an equal opportunity lap sitter. If his person in the home is not available, he will choose another human resident to snuggle.
Topaz is an extremely special little guy -- he doesn't know he is any different than the other dogs in his foster home. And speaking of other dogs, he does very well! He has even attempted some play in recent days with the younger doggie crew in his foster home. And while other dogs are just fine in his world, he prefers humans to dogs for his comfort. We have no idea how he would do with cats but we would bet he would be just fine in a home with a canine friendly cat.
Topaz has been neutered, had a recent dental and all of his vaccinations! Now he is ready to find his forever home. This special guy is literally a valuable little gem. To apply to adopt this boy - please fill out an application on our site at www.doxiebyproxy.org/application
