Name: Duncan
Nicknames: Dunky. Duncs. Dunc. Dunky Doodle.
Breed: Mixed Breed. Yes, we know, we know, he looks like a Weim mix.
Sex: Male
Age: 2.5 years
Weight: ~67 lbs.
Before OMD: Duncan (fka Mutt) and his brother were adopted from the rescue as puppies in 2022. 1.5 years later, his adopter called us to relinquish him when her vet refused to euthanize him - Duncan had been having a medical crisis for weeks (lethargic, losing weight, anemic, and tanking platelets) and his adopter was unwilling to do the full diagnostics and further treatment. We took Duncan back into rescue and after many exams, courses of antibiotics and steroids, and repeat upon repeat of bloodwork, we are happy to say Duncan's blood work looks normal and he's gained his weight back. Ultimately, something triggered the anemia and thrombocytopenia, but he is now recovered and cleared by his internist. He's also seen our ortho surgeon and had successful FHO surgery.
Energy level: Medium. Loves to go for walks and run around in the yard. He has two daily "witching hours" where he wants to play for about an hour and, if you dare not participate, he will go take your shoe or a piece of clothing, or a throw pillow, and bring it to his bed and sulk.
Affection level: Medium-high. He is definitely cuddly. He thinks he is a 5 lb. lap dog and wants to curl up right on you, but he also enjoys lounging on his bed or the couch alone.
Best description: He tilts his head when you’re talking as if he truly understands but then will proceed to do the very thing you told him not to. When people say “Bless his heart”, they are basically talking about him.
What we love most: He's a total goofball. He gives hugs and kisses. He lays his head right on your chest or shoulder. When his ears flip back and he's blissfully unaware. When he lays on the edge of the couch and rolls right off. His lack of spatial awareness - he rolls on his back and his legs-for-days are just everywhere!
What he loves most: Toys. Bully sticks. Benbones. Peanut butter Kongs. Blueberries. Blueberry ice cubes. Yogurt.
Working on: He's a puppy in a 2 year old body. Boundaries. Basic manners like keeping four on the floor. Over-stimulation on leash when he sees other dogs.
Dogs: Sure but dogs should be tolerant of his rougher, unaware play style.
Cats: We think this could work if the cat is dog-savvy.
Kids: He was raised with younger kiddos, but he has not since interacted with kids. Dog-savvy sturdy kids would be best as he is a jumper and totally unaware of his size.
House-trained: Yep
Crate-trained: Yes
Duncan is neutered, vaccinated for rabies, heartworm negative, and microchip. He is available for adoption to residents of CT and surrounding states. Please complete an application if interested in adopting.
