Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
Take a look at this sweet girl! Gracie is about 1-2 years old.
She has so much love to give and is looking for a forever home, or a foster in the meantime.
She's got it all! Good with kids, kennel trained, housebroken, and just amazing to all of the volunteers up here!
She has a couple of quirks, which all pets do.
She likes to flip her bowl so that she can eat her food on the floor. We're working on trying to get her to try new methods of eating breakfast and dinner, such as puzzle feeders, and various food dispensing toys, but she's not quite interested in those yet.
NO CATS! She cannot be around cats, smaller animals, or chickens. Her prey drive kicks in pretty hard.
But with her breeds, or what we think her breeds are, it can be expected. Her original paperwork has her listed as a Belgium Malinois/Coonhound mix. She has the facial structure of the Malinois and the energy, but the goofy personality of a coonhound and the coloring.
We'd prefer to have someone with knowledge of the Malinois breed so that she doesn't end up coming back up here for her nature, but we are also willing to meet with those who are willing to agree to train her further and maintain that.
She already knows some basic commands and uses them consistently.
Oh, and she loves playing fetch with a ball. Former owner says if you throw it once, be prepared to continue throwing it for a good bit!
We see more playful than spastic out of her, so we think she'd be a great fit for a family willing to put in the time with her!
She is a bit intense and will need regular exercise and perhaps a “job” – she would excel no doubt at agility, etc.

Our adoption process takes about 24 hours, unless prior arrangements have been made. Each applicant is required to submit two personal references and one veterinarian reference (if first time pet owner that is waived). Please email us for the adoption application form.
We also ask that an adopter's dog and the adoptable dog meet each other prior to finalizing the adoption. This is to protect you and both the dogs. We have an exercise yard and are happy to introduce them there while monitoring closely.
Adoption of multiple pets may qualify for an adoption fee discount if the fee is not already reduced.

Summer hours: Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. open to the public; closed Sunday and Monday. If these hours do not work with your schedule please don't hesitate to contact us. We have volunteers who are willing to meet outside of those hours for serious inquiries.
Our volunteers and adoptable pets can be seen at several public events such as the Fort Leavenworth PAIR Day (please stop by our booth/table and meet some of our volunteers and the furbabies they bring), running/walking with adoptable dogs in races and dropping by the farm supply store with an adoptable dog in tow or strolling through the farmer's market to help socialized dogs and find them matches.
We always need volunteers! Please contact us if you are interested. Commitment can range from a lot to not much time at all. We need help with regular shifts to care for animals, covering hours of operation, cleaning kennels, walking dogs, cuddling kittens, etc.

More about this shelter
Our facility is overseen by FMWR but is all volunteer staffed. We pride ourselves on the level of dedication as we are there for the love of the pets. Our volunteer duties range from walking dogs to cleaning kennels to volunteer recruitment and coordination.
We are proud to say we do not euthanize for need of space. We are a low-kill facility in that we minimize it to medical issues and extreme behavior issues. We have treated dogs for heartworm and other treatable medical issues to make them adoptable; we do not base our decisions on a pre-set rule but a guideline that allows us to handle every pet on a case-by-case basis.
