How I Arrived At NHS: I lived in a loving home but my owners had to move and I could not go with them. I am a very kind and gentle dog, I can also be a lazy boy! I like to go walking, but I will pull on the leash. But with some love and training I should conquer that. I am a smart boy- I already know: sit, out, lay down and paw. I did live with another Great Pyr and did good with him. I have been around cats. I would chase them, mostly to just smell them. But I do get scared of then if they stand up to me. I don`t care to have my nails trimmed. I did live with 4 kids and did well with them. I do like to jump on strangers - this is something we can work on together I am scared of tall men sometimes and will try to run from them I also am a social eater. ( I also love to `steal` food if no one is watching. I am a great dog and will be a great companion .,

All the dogs at Northwoods Humane Society have had a basic exam by NHS veterinary staff. They have been microchipped, tested for Heartworm (if over 6 months of age), had at least their first distemper combo vaccination (2nd if here longer), dewormed with a general dewormer, and had a flea and tick treatment applied if applicable. All the dogs will be spayed or neutered before they are adopted to their new permanent homes. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix.

There may be a 24 to 48 hour waiting period before adoption is finalized. All responsible adults in the family must be in agreement. The goal of NHS is for each adoption to be permanent.

NHS was authorized as a non-profit organization in 1987. NHS is funded through donations, memberships, adoption fees and fund raising. A volunteer Board of Directors establishes policies and operational guidelines.
Our objectives are to place animals in good, loving homes. To provide appropriate health care for NHS animals waiting for homes. To work to nurture and train animals so that they are adoptable. To educate the public on humane treatment of animals. To administer a spay/neuter assistance program. To provide a pet visitation program to local nursing homes. To provide a pet education program for area schools and the general public. To work cooperatively with the Sawyer County Dog Pound and the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation Animal Control (which are independent of NHS). To network community Resources to meet the needs of animals. To provide a pet food shelf for families in need. To operate the NHS Shelter.
