Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
Abigail How did I feel in late September when I was brought to the HSHC by a kind lady? As if I`d landed on a strange, new planet, couldn`t speak the language, and didn`t know what to expect. I have always been a stray kitty, surviving by hunting, hiding, and hoping. I am 1.5-years-old and lucky to be alive. The trouble was that everything that happened to me here was terrifying. Hissing, swatting, and trying to hide were the only methods I had to communicate my fear. My pictures show the anxiety I felt when facing a camera--big eyes and nervous energy. However, forty-eight days later, I`ve learned that these human beings only want to care for me and make me comfortable. Now, I will seek their attention and affection. When the interviewer lady opened my door, I was slightly skittish, but I slowly extended my nose to sniff her hand. Soon, I was rubbing my head against her hand to solicit pets. I flopped onto my side so she could rub my cheeks and neck, all the while making biscuits on the blanket. I will probably always feel anxious about visits to the Vet, but you can help me cope by positively associating the cat carrier and traveling with treats and affection. When you adopt me, I must be given extra time to adapt to the routine, people, and environment. Creating positive associations is crucial in helping me feel safe. This new world still seems strange and foreign, but I like being loved! 11-12-24

With an open admission policy, a No-Kill philosophy, and more than 3,100 animals crossing our threshold each year, we have still maintained a 98% placement rate over the last 3 years.
This is an amazing feat for any organization…let alone one that takes in some of the most abused, injured and seriously ill animals imaginable.
