Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
Rowan and his sister were dumped in a Raleigh neighborhood with two other dogs. While we were able to trap Rowan and his sister, the other two dogs disappeared. Once trapped, Rowan turned out to be a wonderful little dog with a big personality!
We we first saw Rowan, we noticed he had a limp. We discovered during Rowan's care that his limp was from a long ago broken femur! So long ago broken that the pieces had fused to his pelvis. Unfortunately, due to the level of damage to both the femur and his pelvis, his leg could not be put back together, despite the efforts of his vet. Ultimately, his leg had to be removed.
Once recovered from surgery, Rowan forgot he ever had a fourth leg and is now running around like a mad man playing with his foster buddies! He's had to learn a lot about living in a home and is doing well. He still has more training ahead of him and we know he will find a great family to teach him!
Rowan would like an active home that will take him for daily walks and weekly adventures! He likes the NC Museum of Art, the Greenway near his foster home, and Lake Johnson Park! He has also tried to stay quiet while his foster family ate dinner at Craft Public House! He's a good little trooper and will delight his new family! Evenings in the back yard enjoying the sounds of birds and cicadas, while his family chat and watch the dogs play is another joy for Rowan!

All HEART dogs have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated for rabies, kennel cough, distemper, parvo, adenovirus, and hepatitis. All dogs over the age of six months are tested for heartworms and, if they test positive, have either been treated or provided alternative slow-kill treatment. Dogs are provided monthly heartworm and flea prevention. Dogs are also provided additional medical care, as needed. This care may include amputations, wound repair, treatment for skin disorders, dental care, treatment for infection and other medical needs

Their adoption process
Additional adoption info
If you find a dog or cat in which you are interested, please email us for an adoption application! This is how our adoption process begins! Our organization is made up of volunteers who work full time jobs when not doing rescue. We generally have access to our email throughout the day, but not the phone, so please email for quickest response! Because we are at work, we cannot always answer you right away. Please give us time!
You can also fill out an application to be pre-approved to adopt, if you don't see a particular breed and/or dog of interest on our site. Once approved, HEART will hold your application for three months and contact you when a dog or cat enters our program that we believe might be a good match for your family.
It takes about a week to ten days to process an application, depending on the time available to our volunteers and how quickly references call back. If we must ask for information not included in the application, or we discover information not addressed in the application, the process does get bogged down and may take longer.
Our adoption fees vary depending on the type of animal of interest. Generally, cats are between $95 and $115. Dogs tend to be between $150 and $225.

More about this rescue
We are a nonprofit, all volunteer, limited admission rescue organization funded by private donations. We are committed to responsiblly re-homing homeless and unwanted dogs and cats.
We are a limited admissions rescue. We can only take in as many animals as our foster homes can safely and responsibly care for. We do not euthanize animals to make room for more. We simply stop taking in new animals until we have room. Each homeless companion animal will remain in our care until he or she finds a new home.
