My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

How I Arrived At NHS: I am a transfer from Companion Animal Control.

Notes from NHS volunteer: Hey there my fellow dog lovers! Let me introduce you to Balboa, the dog who has stolen my heart and the hearts of everyone at Northwoods. This 4-year-old Retriever Lab mix is a bundle of energy and love, and he’s got quite the fan club!
When I come in to volunteer, Balboa is one of the first dogs I go to see. He can be a bit stressed in his kennel, barking away, but don’t let that fool you. Once you get him outside, he transforms into a different dog altogether.
Balboa loves making new friends with visitors and keeps us all entertained with his antics. He’s been at Northwoods for over a month now, patiently waiting for his forever home.
This furry ball of energy has a list of favorite pastimes that will make you smile. He’s a Tug of War champion, a Fetch fanatic, and a master of Spin the Rope. Watching him do the Twist while scratching his back is a sight you can’t un-see!—his body twitching back and forth, legs kicking, and the happiest, goofiest look on his sweet muzzle. Pure doggy delight!
Balboa sits politely for treats and adores petting, ear scratches, belly rubs, and most of all, your undivided love and attention. He also loves it when you hide treats around the play yard so he can sniff to his heart’s content. Not a blade of grass will be left unturned in his quest for a snack!
This smart pup thrives on mental stimulation and is a quick learner. He remembers what every staff or volunteer member wants him to do for a treat. He’s a people pleaser through and through. Despite his larger size, if he could fit on your lap, he’d be there in a heartbeat. He’ll settle for huggles, kisses, and all the attention you can give him. He will even hug you back if you let him!
Once Balboa finds his forever home, the possibilities of what he can learn are endless. With time, slow introductions, and patience, he will be ready to make lots of furry friends. He’ll never run out of love and total devotion for his new family.
Come into Northwoods and spend some time with this irresistible big bundle of unstoppable love. He will Rock your world! Hoping Rocky Balboa finds his forever home soon, just in time for the holiday season!

Good With Kids: Older, respectful kids (8 and up) possibly. We do recommend a slow introduction.
Good With Cats: No
Good With Dogs: No. He does not seem to like other dogs here at the shelter.
