My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

One of our sweet golden girls seeks a loving forever home. We are really hoping we can find a very special home for a very special little lady.
We know there is someone out there for her. She has been through so much in her life, we want this phase of her life to be the one where she gets pampered and spoiled and treated like a queen.
She has a look of longing in her eyes. Longing for someone to understand her and what she needs.
Here is what we know about her:
She arrived at a stray, no one came for her.
🟢She doesn't seem reactive to other animals.
⚠️She doesn't care for people standing in front of her kennel starring at her. She would rather be sitting on the sofa with you.
🟢She is neat in her kennel. ✅ Crate trained.
🟡She is nervous outside. She is not the dog that is going to run down the street. She is very easy to guide out to do her potty, go for a short stroll and back into her safe kennel.
Based on how unfamiliar she is with hooman interaction it would seem she has not had a very loving relationship with hoomans. It would seem her purpose was to be a breeding dog. It would seem with her limited experience she has been crated much of her life. She is much more comfortable inside.
We are looking for a patient home where she can begin to learn how good people can be.
We realize this is a special request. Her home needs to be quiet and nurturing and offer her what she can handle without overwhelming her.
⚠️She is not a candidate for a home with children.
⭐️We need a hero who will open up their home and heart and offer Dahlia a place to relax and time to decompress.
We think she can gain confidence through structure, routine and space to be herself.
🟢She allows her volunteers to rub her head, scratch her ears, and put a warm jacket on her.
(Although she looks at us as if we have lost our minds as we dress her.)
🟢She tries to go with the flow.
If you have the special skills we seek please step up and help us save this sweet soul. You can offer her a whole new world!
🟡 Cautious personality. Go slow with all new routines and new people.
She needs to gain a little weight. Came in at 56 pounds.
Dahlia needs an easy couch potato life style.
She needs her people to help her learn what love is.❤️

A "meet and greet" is required with all family members and the pet prior to finalizing the adoption application. If someone is adopting a dog and has another dog at home, we also require a "meet and greet" for the dogs as well. More about this shelter

The Humane Society of Wicomico County was started in 1968 by a group of people who wanted to help improve the lives of animals. We have come a long way in our 40+ years! We have a staff dedicated to making sure the animals that come to our doors are loved and protected as they wait for their forever home. Not only are our animals vaccinated, wormed and given flea preventative, we can treat animals that come to us with mange, ringworm, heartworm and pay for animals to be seen by an outside vet should there be a need. We have an on-site spay/neuter clinic that not only is used for our animals but we also offer low cost spay/neuter for animals of the public. We provide emergency boarding for victims of domestic abuse, fire, and medical emergencies. We also have the capability to set up an off-site emergency shelter for people evacuated from their homes. In addition, we have an education program to help teach kids about being a responsible pet guardian. We work with a wide range of rescue groups and our animals have been transported from our mid-Atlantic area throughout the North Eastern United States. Our shelter is an open admission shelter and we will take in approximately 3500 animals this year. We do what we do because of our love for animals and our desire to make a difference in their lives every single day.
