Our hearts just break when we encounter thin, hungry pups. You just know that they have not always known kindness, yet their survival spirit still shines. Nelsa is one such dog. This beautiful girl was found as a hungry, sad stray, and she was still so happy. But she needed to rest up and regain her strength and she did just that! She is now enjoying her time with staff and volunteers, and we are enjoying her company too. One volunteer shared, “Nelsa was very eager and happy to get out of her kennel, she couldn’t help but stand on her back legs while I was trying to leash her. She’s treat motivated, so if you give her a treat, she’s easy to leash. On our walk, she constantly checked in and sat for treats. While Nelsa seemed to have a lot of energy coming out of her kennel, she was much more relaxed and enjoyed the walk about 10 min out of the kennel. She seems like a happy girl that is always up for an adventure.” She sounds amazing, right? That’s because she is! Meet this awesome gal soon.

More about this shelter
At the Humane Rescue Alliance, we honor more than 150 years of commitment to protecting animals, supporting families, and advocating for positive change to create a world where all animals can thrive. HRA serves as a national leader and local champion for all animals.
LOCAL FOCUS
With a people-focused, community-based approach, we treat every animal as an individual and emphasize specialized care for both animals and their families. Through our five campuses in the District of Columbia and New Jersey, we are the largest animal services provider in our region – touching the lives of tens of thousands of animals annually through direct rescue, care, and community-based services. Our teams find solutions to both small and big problems, from providing direct care to an animal in crisis to tackling systemic barriers to affordable, pet-friendly housing.
