Always wanted a Chow but need a smaller, less fluffy dog? This guy is the perfect pocket sized mix at about 25lbs but with the looks and shy aloof loyal personality of a Chow Chow. This 8.5 year old mix was surrendered when the new baby was allergic and is such a sensitive soul already that he’s really taken the life change hard. He’s not been aggressive at all, just isn’t the type to run up and greet strangers and has to take his time to warm up to new people and places. His sad tragic facial expression and slow Eeyore-like movements are actually partially medical in origin- his bloodwork showed he was severely hypothyroid. We love hypothyroid diagnosis’s- it’s so inexpensive and easy to treat with just a magic daily pill and all their skin issues, sluggishness, and extra pounds are easily resolved! He’s been doing well on his medication and getting neutered, a dental, and his cherry eye repaired and will be ready for a home very soon. He’s been housebroken and crate trained in foster, a quiet easy keeper. He likes meeting other dogs, but can get annoyed if they bother him when sleeping or eating so would be fine as an only dog or just needs his own separate space at times. We aren’t sure what his actual mix is or if there really is any chow in there, but he could be corgi, Shiba Inu, Chihuahua, Pom, or a bunch of other breeds mixed together.
Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Hercules in Northern NJ during adopt a senior month!
Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

We request that adopters fill out a pre-adoption application either in person at our adoption day or through our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com. This helps us make sure the animal's personality is a good match for your household. Adoption fees vary according to the dog's age, breed, adoptability, and how much we have had to spend in vet bill on them. Adopters sign a contract at the time of adoption, and the animal must come back to us if they do not work out in the home.
