My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hey there, future humans! I’m Tootsie Roll, the one-year-old hound mix with enough charm and cuteness to make you want to do a happy dance! My shiny coat and adorable face are just the beginning of the happiness I can bring into your life. Seriously, have you seen my smile? It could brighten even the cloudiest day! I’m a laid-back and quiet girl who absolutely adores everyone—humans, dogs, and even those squeaky toys that are always up for a good conversation (not that I’m the one who talks much!). I prefer to soak in the love around me rather than cause a ruckus, so if you like peaceful moments with a side of goofy affection, I’m your gal! I’m a pro at walking on a leash, which means I’ll gracefully lead you through scenic strolls as we sniff out all the best spots on the island (bonus points if there’s ice cream involved!). My brains match my beauty; I’m a smart cookie with a sweet personality, ready to learn all sorts of tricks to impress you! Now, I’m on the lookout for my forever family who’s ready for some fun adventures, epic playtime, and the coziest snuggles known to dogkind. Whether you’re on this paradise island or ready to fly to the mainland in search of new escapades, I’m game! So grab your hiking boots, prepare to play fetch like a champion, and get ready for cuddles that could melt even the hardest hearts. Let’s roll into this paw-some journey together! Who can say no to a charming girl like me, Tootsie Roll? Schedule a meet and greet today or walk in anytime from 12 pm - 4 pm except for Thursdays.

More about this shelter

The Kauai Humane Society was established by the community in 1952 as a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to protect Kauai’s animals. We opened our current home just west of Lihue in 2001 thanks to the generous support of many individuals, families, businesses and foundations. We are an independent animal welfare organization and not a chapter of any mainland or Hawaii group.

The Kauai Humane Society(KHS) is the only physical animal shelter in Kauai County, Hawaii. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a government contract to allow KHS to provide services to Kauai County for humane field services for cats and dogs.

Our facility does not turn away any sick or injured cat or dog found on Kauai. We strive to not euthanize any healthy, adoptable, and/or treatable animals for space or treatable medical reasons.

In 2022, for the year overall, KHS achieved a Live Release Rate of 94.4%; meaning 94.4% of the animals that came into KHS during 2022 were released with a positive outcome of being adopted, returned to the owner, or transferred to a rescue group.
