My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Aloha, future family! I’m Kahu, which means `guardian` in Hawaiian, and I’m here to bring some love into your life! I’m a 5-year-old black hound mix, and while I might be a bit shy at first, I promise my heart is as big as the beautiful ocean waves around Kauai. I’m a laid-back guy who walks like a pro on a leash, making every stroll feel like a peaceful island adventure. Whether we’re exploring the lush trails or just taking a leisurely walk down the beach, I’ll be right by your side, ready to soak in all the sights and smells. Just a few yummy treats and some gentle love, and I’ll warm up to you in no time! Why do you need a Kahu in your life? Because I’m not just a dog; I’m the perfect companion for exploring the island, sunshine-filled days, and cozy cuddle sessions. Imagine snuggling up on the couch with your new best friend after a fun day of playtime—sounds pretty perfect, right? I’m on a quest to find my forever family, whether you’re ready to enjoy island life or you’re looking to fly to the mainland. Adventure awaits, and together, we can create a lifetime of memories filled with laughter, play, and endless snuggles. So what do you say? Are you ready to let a gentle guardian like me, Kahu, into your heart and home? Let’s embark on this paw-some journey together! Schedule a meet and greet today or walk in anytime from 12 pm - 4 pm except for Thursdays.

More about this shelter

The Kauai Humane Society was established by the community in 1952 as a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to protect Kauai’s animals. We opened our current home just west of Lihue in 2001 thanks to the generous support of many individuals, families, businesses and foundations. We are an independent animal welfare organization and not a chapter of any mainland or Hawaii group.

The Kauai Humane Society(KHS) is the only physical animal shelter in Kauai County, Hawaii. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a government contract to allow KHS to provide services to Kauai County for humane field services for cats and dogs.

Our facility does not turn away any sick or injured cat or dog found on Kauai. We strive to not euthanize any healthy, adoptable, and/or treatable animals for space or treatable medical reasons.

In 2022, for the year overall, KHS achieved a Live Release Rate of 94.4%; meaning 94.4% of the animals that came into KHS during 2022 were released with a positive outcome of being adopted, returned to the owner, or transferred to a rescue group.
