My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Benson is about 3 years old and about 60ish lbs, with a sad story... He was left by the side of a road, and is said to have hungbout there for about 2 weeks before he was rescued! He is now with GRRAND and being evaluated and given lots of love and TLC, but he has been mentally damaged... What we know so far:

Benson is very timid and needs a foster or adoptive home willing to work with him. He is a huge flight risk and therefore needs a secure above ground fenced yard and an experienced family… no little kids since he is afraid to approach people. He was dumped and stayed right in the spot next to the highway where he was dumped, waiting for his people to come back. As we have no history on him, but due to his fearfulness, we suspect he may not have been socialized in a family’s home. He may have been a breeder dog or an outdoor dog with little human contact.  He is super sweet and submissive, but needs a special placement. He has had a rough time as some people have gone to see him with their dog and they couldn’t get him to come close enough to them to touch him. He needs a home who has the time to work with Benson and the patience to know he will need time to adjust.

We are happy to report that Benson is in a foster home and she says "Ben is making slow progress. I believe had had never been inside or had much human interaction, and is very fearful of noises and people. He has only had one accident in three weeks and is good about going potty outside. He has figured out doors and is less fearful going in and out. New or loud noises and new people still terrify him, but he is starting to be less fearful when meeting people. We go on walks twice a day and he is good on a leash, although he is fearful of his leash and harness.
He has put on some much needed weight and all of the mats in his coat have been clipped out.  His coat will be pretty when it grows back out.  He likes being brushed and I brushed
him daily.
I’m starting to work with him on basic commands, since he does not seem to know any commands.  He seems interested in other dogs that we meet on our walks, although he is the only dog in my home. He is a very sweet and submissive boy with a lot of fear from being outside and unsocialized."

We are still learning about him, so please check back later for more info, but if you would like to help Benson get out of the kennel, and be the loving family to help him through his fears and insecurities, please fill out an app at GRRAND.org

More about this rescue

Early in 1994, members of the Greater Louisville Golden Retriever Club began to see the need for an organization to rehabilitate and find homes for displaced and abused Golden Retrievers. A number of folks in this club began organizing an ad hoc rescue group. As the number of rescues increased over a period of months, this “wet behind the ears” group came up with a name and in 1996, incorporated the organization now known as Golden Retriever Rescue & Adoption of Needy Dogs (GRRAND). The rest, as they say, is history!
