Their Foster Parent Says: "Coyote is the sweetest pup and the perfect city dog! He’s incredibly playful and curious, and has been adjusting well to NYC Fall after his time in LA (he especially loves chasing all of the falling leaves in Brooklyn Bridge Park). He still gets distracted by all of the city sounds, especially loud cars and motorcycles, but that doesn’t stop him from exploring. Heloves people and is working towards not jumping on them when they walk into his foster home. He barely barks when under human supervision; however he’s still working on not barking when he’s left alone. He’s been improving a lot as he gets settled and I’m confident that after a few more days here he’ll be more comfortable on his own. He’s also had a few accidents indoors, but generally seems to know that he’s supposed to go to the bathroom outside. Overall, he seems like a very trainable dog that is receptive to feedback from his humans. Coyote has already brightened our home so much, and we can’t wait to help him find his forever home!"
Level of dog ownership experience needed:
BEGINNER: This means we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale due to its breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup.
Energy level
MEDIUM: Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)
Cuddle Bug Level
High -- Wants to be in your lap pretty much all the time
Potty Trained
Yes - Understands where to do his business. Might have some transitional accidents as he gets used to a new home, etc
Comfortable with Children? (ALWAYS requires supervision)
Yes - Okay in a home with respectful children
Social with Other Dogs?
Yes - fine to be in a home with another dog. Good with other dogs/
Respectful of Other Animals? (cats, small pets, etc.)
Yes - we think he would be fine in a home with cats
Mouthy Behavior?
Nope - past this stage in his life
Leash Manners?
Old Pro - great on the leash
Okay in the city?
Yes - He’s already made a lot of progress in just a couple of days!
Jumping on People to Say Hi?
Medium - might jump up on people he knows. Will adjust to correction
Separation Anxiety?
Working On It - Learning how to be home alone. Getting better every day. Takes time to adjust to a new home, schedule etc.
Crate training? - comfortable going in and out of the crate. When we close the door he is not happy at first but can eventually relax there. Working on him feeling more comfortable in the crate when there are no humans in the room with him.
Medical status
Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm negative; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake
How this dog ended up with Social Tees:
Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.
PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!
This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.
