Additional adoption info
We offer fostering for those who need a little more time to see if the pet is a right fit for their home.
All animals are medically evaluated by our on staff vet and shelter technicians.
Felines receive a FVRCP, rabies (if old enough), Feline Leukemia, Aids and Heartworm test, monthly flea preventative during their stay at the shelter and are spayed/neutered prior to adoption.
Canines receive a bordetella, parvo/distemper vaccine, rabies (if old enough), heartworm test if they are over 6 months, monthly heartworm/flea preventative during their stay at the facility and are spayed/neutered prior to adoption.
We do adopt out HEARTWORM POSITIVE canines. If the canine is heartworm positive, you will see a (HW+) beside his/her name. Occasionally, we have very generous donors who will sponsor a heartworm treatment for those animals and then you will see (HW+ On Treatment) to indicate this animal is currently on treatment. These pets will still be available for adoption. We also offer the treatment for our adopted animals at a low cost of $500. We feel that having heartworms should not be a barrier to a pet finding a forever home.

More about this shelter
The Animal Care Center provides excellent care and humane treatment for all animals while maintaining a clean and healthy environment for both animals and people. Its main goals are to promote and provide healthy adoptions and work with animal control to better serve Horry County.
We believe animals change lives. As a result, the HCACC is working toward “no-kill” shelter status. In 2021, we took in 3,051 pets. Of those, 2,550 were saved, which represents a nearly 84% save rate.
Each day, we strive to create opportunities for each animal to find the right home for them. Still, we recognize that the health and safety of a given animal, as well as our community, must be taken into consideration, and euthanasia may be the only available option for certain injured, ill, or otherwise unwell animals.
Adoptions occur on a "first-come, f irst-served" basis. We cannot hold an animal. If an animal is listed as adoptable on the County website, the animal remains available.
If you are interested in becoming an HCACC foster, please call 843-915-5172 or email us at
When payment is required for clinic services, the Horry County Animal Care Center accepts cash, Visa, and Mastercard as acceptable forms of payment. We do not accept checks, except for donations. Full payment is due at the time services are rendered.
