My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ATTENTION
Time to meet Shadow & Gus

If you haven’t heard their story already we will fill you in below.

Shadow
9yrs old
Spayed female
83 lbs ‍
Lab mix ‍

Gus
4 yrs old
Neutered male
Hound mix
79 lbs

Shadow and Gus are exceptionally special dogs, and heartbreakingly so find themselves looking for their happily ever after all over again. Together they lived a fairy tale life that some dogs can only dream of. Their owner was a perfect example of the people we strive to find for all of our foster dogs. Both dogs are originally from Nickel City Canine Rescue, where they now find them selves once again. Unfortunately their owner fell sick and passed away in August. Leaving Shadow and Gus behind wondering where he went. There was hope that a friend from a local dog park would take them in after his passing. Unfortunately after many failed attempts it appears this was an empty promise made to their owner. As this person never stepped up to take them. This meant Shadow and Gus were forced to stay alone in the apartment they once lived with their late owner until they were finally placed in a foster home late October.
So, now they are on the hunt for someone to mend their broken hearts after the loss of their very best friend. Shadow and Gus have a very special bond and after already loosing so much, it is our greatest hope that we will be able to fulfill their beloved owners final wish and get them adopted out together. We truly believe that it will be in the best interest of both dogs to keep them together if possible. It was clear to see right away both dogs were well loved, and cared for companions.  With the magic ability to make everyone they meet smile. Their people pleasing, happy go lucky demeanor makes them the perfect dogs for anyone and everyone!   ‍

Here are some of the important things to know about our dynamic duo ‍

Both dogs are fully potty trained! They have not had one single accident while being in their foster home. There have been no incidents of marking either, which is fantastic since they now live in a home with another male dog. They even go outside with ease.

Dog and kid friendly!! They are both good around the little ones. They love to sniff and give kisses but they are always on their best behavior. They are now living with a toddler, who is always on the move! While these two definitely love each other the most they are also dog friendly.  Gus being the more energetic one especially loves play time with their new foster brother.  While Shadow is not overly interested in playtime she is also dog friendly!  Their late owner used to frequent the dog park with them so they are well socialized! It’s also nice to note that while being in foster care their foster has not seen any issues regarding food or toy guarding!

These two sure know how to keep a space clean! These smarty pants know not to take things that don’t belong to them. Yup, no chewed up furniture or stolen socks for these guys. Because of this they can be left out alone, no need for a crate!  While they do enjoy their dog beds for a nice snooze, they wouldn’t dream of destroying that either!

Energy levels? Gus can lounge with even the biggest couch potato, but thoroughly enjoys any play time with you or other dogs. He’d love a yard to run and play in or a person to go on walks with. However he is past the puppy energy stage, so if you’re more chill he’ll be fine with that too! Shadow, now this girl is living her best life as a couch potato . While she is happy to go for a walk, take a toy or play in the back yard she’s enjoying the simple things in life like belly rubs and a good tv show cuddled up with you!

It shatters our hearts to know that this sweet pair has to start their journey all over again. But they are proven to be resilient, optimistic and ready for this next chapter. Gus is the very best boy. he’s guaranteed to be your best buddy and most loyal companion. You’ll find yourself looking to him often to make you laugh and put a smile on your face. Shadow is one of the sweetest, most laid back and loving dogs you will find. Her foster calls her “mama” because once you meet her you’ll find yourself needing her more than she needs you due to her nurturing behavior. She’s a comfort to any person she meets and a calming presence in the room.  Not all dogs compliment each other as perfectly as these two. They will undoubtedly become the light in your life.

Can you be the person they need to mend and put back all the pieces of their broken hearts? Don’t make these guys wait any longer.  Please, consider welcoming this sweet pair into your home. It’ll be the best choice you ever make.

If you are interested in Gus & Shadow, please apply at the adoption link in the comments below or message the rescue if you are already pre-approved.

Additional adoption info

Thank you for your interest in adopting through Nickel City Canine Rescue! Please visit our Website and complete the Adoption Application. Once received, we will begin processing it as quickly as possible. Our process includes checking your personal and veterinarian references, a home visit, and a meet and greet.

1. Fill out the online application.

2. Once received, a volunteer will be assigned to your app. They will first make the reference calls and contact your vet.

3. After calls have been completed, the volunteer will contact you to set up a home visit. Please keep in mind this is a VOLUNTEER doing this in their free time, it may not happen immediately.

4. Once the home visit is completed and if you are approved, you will receive a pre-approval card and can then express interest in a dog.

**General Disclaimer- Once a dog is posted online it is open to receive multiple applications. We do not limit the number of apps and cannot guarantee the dog will be available by the time your home visit has been completed. If there are already pre-approved adopters interested, their names will be placed on the dog’s list. This is why we highly recommend getting approved ahead of time. If it is a popular dog, it will likely have a list of names before your application can be processed.

Once pre-approved:

Email or Facebook message the rescue stating your name on the app, the dog(s) you are interested in, and best way to contact you.

Your name will be placed on the dogs list. This is a first come first serve basis. We accept up to 5 names on each dogs list. You are NOT guaranteed a meet and greet as there may be people ahead of you on the list!

The dogs foster will reach out to set up a meet and greet if they get to your name. You may not hear from the foster immediately if there are people ahead of you meeting the dog.

If you have a meet and greet and both adopter and Foster think it’s the right fit, the adoption may be finalized.

If a dog gets adopted by another adopter ahead of you on the list, the dog will be removed from the website and the available dogs folder on Facebook. We try to send emails to notify adopters, but this is not an automated system and with so many dogs and names this may get missed on occasion. Feel free to message or email for an update. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at info@nickelcitycaninerescue.org

We do our best to respond to each email, inquiry, and application in a timely manner. Please be sure to monitor your email account and your phone to ensure we are able to contact you. Furthermore, please make sure your personal references, your veterinarian, and your landlord (if applicable) are aware that we will be calling to ensure no delays in processing your application. If you are concerned because you haven’t been contacted in a timely manner, please do feel free to follow up with us, check in, & let us that you are still interested!

*Currently we only adopt out within a 1 hour drive from the Buffalo Niagara airport. We will considered processing applications outside that area if the family has no other dogs in the home and is willing to come to buffalo for the Meet and Greet. The rescue does not provide transport services to out of town adopters
