My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Have you ever wondered how much joy a little furry friend can bring into your life? Well, let me introduce myself—I’m Opossum, a charming senior dog with a heart full of love and a laid-back vibe that will make every day feel like a sunny Hawaiian adventure! I may not have the best eyesight, but what I lack in vision, I make up for with a ton of wisdom and charm. And let me tell you, I’m a guaranteed showstopper! Everywhere I go, people stop in their tracks to meet me and shower me with love. Just imagine the fame we’ll achieve together—red carpet events, doggy selfies, the whole nine yards! At just 12 lbs, I’m the perfect size for all of life’s escapades—whether we’re lounging on the couch or exploring the beach, I’m ready to be your trusty sidekick! I’m a fantastic listener, and nothing makes me happier than snuggling up close while we share stories or plan our next great adventure. Life is simply better with a dog like me by your side. I’m on the lookout for my forever family, so if you’re ready to open your heart and home, I’m ready to pack my tiny doggie bags—whether that means staying right here in paradise or flying off to new adventures on the mainland! Let’s make some unforgettable memories together, one snuggle at a time. Adopt me, and I promise to fill your days with joy and laughter. Aloha and woof! Schedule a meet and greet today or walk in anytime from 12 pm - 4 pm except for Thursdays.

More about this shelter

The Kauai Humane Society was established by the community in 1952 as a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to protect Kauai’s animals. We opened our current home just west of Lihue in 2001 thanks to the generous support of many individuals, families, businesses and foundations. We are an independent animal welfare organization and not a chapter of any mainland or Hawaii group.

The Kauai Humane Society(KHS) is the only physical animal shelter in Kauai County, Hawaii. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a government contract to allow KHS to provide services to Kauai County for humane field services for cats and dogs.

Our facility does not turn away any sick or injured cat or dog found on Kauai. We strive to not euthanize any healthy, adoptable, and/or treatable animals for space or treatable medical reasons.

In 2022, for the year overall, KHS achieved a Live Release Rate of 94.4%; meaning 94.4% of the animals that came into KHS during 2022 were released with a positive outcome of being adopted, returned to the owner, or transferred to a rescue group.
