My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ruger
Berlin, VT

Ruger is a great boy looking for a special home. This approximately seven-year-old neutered male has a winning personality and would love nothing more than to live out his days by your side. Great with dogs, loves meeting new people, and a pretty easy keeper: he's a solid 10/10 doggo.

Ruger's story is a sad one, but we want to make sure he gets another shot at the good life. Ruger originally came to ACDRA two years ago, heartworm positive and in need of help. He was adopted by his foster home, who helped him through treatment and gave him a great life these past two years. Unfortunately, Ruger's dad passed away unexpectedly and he found himself back in a shelter. We welcomed him back into ACDRA care as soon as we found out, only to discover more misfortune: cancer. Ruger has leukemia.

This diagnosis has not put a damper on his spirit: Ruger remains a happy boy with a zest for life. He loves playing with canine friends in the yard, enjoys meeting new people, and LOVES getting all the scritches. He'll plop at your feet and lean against you, pawing impatiently if you take too long to commence the pets. He enjoys going for walkies, though due to his current weight he can't put in big miles. His quality of life is good, and he has been started on prednisone to help give him as many more good days as we can. With this treatment plan he has a prognosis of 12-18 months, and we would love to see him placed back into a loving home where he can make the most of the time he has left.

Given his circumstances, Ruger is available as a hospice adoption with a waived adoption fee. He is on a prescription for daily prednisone, which will continue to be provided by the rescue. Periodic CBC bloodwork is recommended to track disease progression and adjust his dosage if needed. He is up to date on vaccinations and monthly preventatives, and showing no signs of illness save for some ear lesions which do not bother him. Ruger is overweight at 41lbs and on a diet, which should be continued to help increase his longevity - his current target weight is 30lbs. He is housetrained and has adjusted well to being crated, though I suspect he had free reign of the home and furniture in his last home.

More about this rescue

We are an all volunteer group that rescues Australian Cattle Dogs. Our dogs reside in foster homes until they are adopted
Every year, thousands of Australian Cattle Dogs find themselves homeless through no fault of their own. Although the reasons are diverse, the result is the same. Healthy, adoptable dogs face euthanasia in shelters.

The Australian Cattle Dog Rescue Association rescues ACDs in shelters from Maine to Georgia and gives these dogs a fresh start with a loving family. Our foster home volunteers welcome the dogs into their homes where they live as members of the family. During the time in foster care, our volunteers determine what kind of forever home will be the right one for each dog.
