Maxwell is an adult male who arrived at the shelter as an owner surrender on 10/31, due to medical concerns preventing Maxwell's owners from providing him all the care and attention he needs. Maxwell has since impressed staff and volunteers with his exuberance, joyfulness, and sweet personality!
Behavioral notes:
Per volunteer on 11/4: Maxwell is a happy, playful, and friendly boy. He was easy to leash and take out of his kennel. He's definitely housetrained as he went to the bathroom many times once outside. Maxwell is an energetic guy that expresses his joyfulness with zoomies and play bows. Maxwell always appears to be happy and excited to explore his surroundings, pulling at times when he follows a scent. At the sight of a treat, Maxwell quickly sits still and calm until he's given a snack. He enjoys being pet all over, but he especially loves getting butt scratches. I had no issue returning Maxwell to his kennel.
Per staff on 10/31: Super sweet dog! Became very stressed and was whining and panting once his owner left the lobby, but still allowed all petting and handling and gave us tail wags.
BEHAVIOR EVALUATION (11/1)
KNOWN HISTORY:
Owner surrender
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Maxwell was laying on his bed and got up when the handler called eyes. He had soft, very elated eyes and low wags. He was easy to leash and once secured came right out.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulled minimally
HANDLING:
Maxwell came out for his eval today. He sniffed around cautiously and went up to the handlers for some nice sniffs. He gave some wags and had scared but soft eyes. He is very nervous and timid but warms up alot with time. He will be very open and loose and after a couple minutes will become timid and fearful and this behavior switches where he wants to be alone and when he's more social and outgoing. He knows how to sit and takes treats a bit snatchy at times. He allowed most handling but did not like his paws being touched. He pulled them back and froze, acting like he couldn't walk on them again. He also was tolerant of his tail being touched but slowly tucked it in. Maxwell needs time and attention and even some patience for him to warm up farther into the cuddly and kissy boy that he's shown.
PLAY
Minimal interest
TOYS:
Minimal interest
Per staff on 11/1: tense body and hard barking in crate yesterday
Per their owner surrender notes on 10/31, Maxwell's owners described him as follows:
- lived with one adult and one child,
- houstrained,
- crate-trained,
- "high" energy and "hyper" in the home,
- has bitten a person or animal but "more then ten day didn't break skin"
- usual reaction toward cats: "trys to eat"
