My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Do long, low doggies make you smile? Meet Pretzel, a handsome 8-years-young male dachshund who is looking for his forever home. Well-mannered and house-trained, he can appear a bit aloof at first. But once he gets to know you, he’s a loyal companion who enjoys a gentle chin scratch and will happily curl up on the couch with you.

Here are some things to know about this little guy:

Demeanor. Pretzel is generally calm and quiet, but when it’s time to eat, he’s all barks, wiggles and tail wags. Food is definitely his love language!

Favorite activities. Pretzel enjoys a leisurely stroll on leash but is happiest when he is free to roam. He loves to sniff around and take in all the sights and sounds, so we will only place him with adopters who have a fenced yard. He also likes squeaky and stuffed toys (which he enjoys unstuffing) and snoozing on a comfy bed.

Compability. Though he’s generally good with most dogs, Pretzel can be selectively social. If another dog has given him a hard time, he won’t forget it. (Anyone who has previously lived with a dachshund will know what we’re talking about.) On the other hand, he’s fine with cats because he was raised with a pack of Persians.

Ideal home. Pretzel would thrive in a home with a mature individual or couple, with or without another dog. Older teens or grown children would be okay, but no youngsters, please. Also, a home with no or few stairs would be best because dachshunds are prone to back issues. For that same reason, it’s important that his adopters resist the temptation to overfeed him or constantly give him treats. An overweight dachshund is one that’s headed for major back problems. Right now, Pretzel weighs 11 lbs. and our vet says his body condition is “ideal.”

Additional adoption info

We are a home and foster care-based rescue, with no shelter facility or employees. Because our rescue dogs live in private homes, we ask those interested in adopting from us to complete our application as the first step in our process and only set up an appointment to meet the dog(s) in which they are interested after they are approved to adopt. Use our online application or email info@savethestrays.org to request an application.

More about this rescue

Save the Strays Animal Rescue is an all-volunteer 501c3 public charity and no-kill humane organization founded in 2004. Our mission is to rescue and rehome unwanted and abandoned dogs and provide lifelong care for any that are not adopted.

All of our dogs receive age-appropriate vaccinations. Dogs six months and older are spayed or neutered and tested for heartworms before adoption. Some of the dogs we rescue and make available for adoption are older, have suffered injuries or have treatable medical conditions. These have included blind dogs, deaf dogs, dogs with amputations, congenital deformities, and limited mobility, and dogs with heart conditions, diabetes and other chronic disorders. We disclose all known health conditions to potential adopters.

Because we do not euthanize rescued dogs to make room for others, some of these dogs may be with us for a number of years or even for life. Your donations help us pay for the care they need to maintain their quality of life in a loving home environment.
