My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ABOUT JOEY
This handsome boy is our 8-month-old lab mix, Joey! He came to HAP from a high-intake shelter in Georgia when they no longer had space for him. Joey is the true definition of a velcro pup, as he loves being close to you and spending time with people. He loves to snuggle and is quick to paw at you when he thinks he deserves more pets. He enjoys long walks or tossing stuffed toys around our fenced fields. Joey walks well on a leash, staying right by your side most of the time and easily redirecting his focus back to you! He also knows basic commands and is eager to please his people. While Joey hasn't met any young kids yet, we think he'd do well with older children who can handle a dog his size!

Joey has participated in our Doggy Day Out program and here's what the volunteer had to say about him: "He was very happy to get outside but was apprehensive about riding in the car. After reassuring and lifting him into the back seat he laid down and cozied up to me for some good boy pets and reassurance. He laid his head on my leg most of the ride. Once he became comfortable we immediately saw his happy go lucky personality come out. After a walk on the bike trail we took him to a local dog friendly establishment where he was a bit timid at first but quickly let his smiley personality show. After becoming more comfortable he greeted people who wanted to meet him but was still timid and shy. His handsome black coat and smile really caught people's attention and he had many compliments on them as well as his well-mannered behavior. He wanted to sit on the bench right beside us to be a part of the conversation and did! We gladly gave him hugs and some loving and he seemed to really enjoy it. He took his treats very gently. He ate his dog food nicely there as well. He enjoyed playing with the other dogs present and can be talkative at them making noises while he is playing. Joey was such a good boy out in public and quickly became comfortable letting his true personality shine through. He enjoyed finding sticks to chew up outside. With some reassurance and warming up to his person he will become the best dog he can be. His loving, timid personality will warm your heart. I think he would really shine with a doggy sibling and/or a patient adopter/family to expose him to new experiences, play time and some nice hikes or walks. I can't say enough about how well behaved he was out in public. On the ride back to the shelter he laid his head on my lap!"

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.
