My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Reba is a 2-year-old Shepherd mix with a heart of gold, a hilarious personality, and an endless supply of affection for her humans. At around 60 pounds, she’s a clever, adventurous girl who thrives on being part of the family. Reba’s love for her people is as strong as her smarts—she’s incredibly loyal, quick to learn, and even quicker to get involved in whatever her humans are doing! Whether you’re gardening or doing laundry, Reba is right there carrying the garden broom or giving clothes the sniff test—happy to show you her unique charm and her genuine desire to be involved.

Reba’s dream home is one where she can run, play, and explore to her heart’s content. With her love for freedom, a yard where she can sprint and chase toys off-leash would be perfect. A secure, 6-foot fence is a must since she’s a bit of an escape artist and will try to outsmart anything lower. She’s also a big fan of outdoor adventures, so a family who enjoys hikes, long walks, or jogging would make an excellent fit. At the end of a long day, Reba is easy to manage at home—she is fully house trained and settles well in her crate, treating it as her safe space.

Reba may be independent, but she thrives when given lots of mental stimulation, affection, and playtime. She’d be happiest with humans who can laugh at her antics and appreciate her playful, talkative nature. Reba’s communication style is endearing—she’ll bring her food bowl over and plop it in front of you when she’s hungry, or nudge you if she’s ready for a game. Monitoring squirrels from her favorite perch or solving all of your dog puzzles are among her favorite pastimes, and she loves showing off her tricks!

Reba does well with other dogs after a slow introduction, and she’s shown warmth around children too, although her energy makes her best suited to homes with older kids. Due to her prey drive, she’s not a good fit for homes with cats or small animals.

She’s a true family member who brings joy, laughter, and endless love to her people. If you’re looking for a dog who’s equal parts brains, energy, and heart, Reba is ready to charm her way into your home.

The adoption fee is $450. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
