This helps Above & Beyond English Setter Rescue with pet care costs.
Socialization/training: Otto will sit and smile for anything. He is eager to please. He knows, sit, down, touch and will come when called. We are working on a leave it and a stay. He is very food motivated and easy to train. He has not exhibited any fears. He gets along with everyone he meets. He loves all other dogs. We have not cat tested him.
Crate trained: Yes. Otto eats his meals in his crate and readily sleeps through the night in his crate. We cover it and reward him for getting in with a kong. He has been left out of the crate in our home with our other dogs for more than 3- hours without incident.
Leash trained: Otto walks well on a leash with a K-9 Bridle. He does not react to anything on our walks around the neighborhood. He will bark if startled but easily calms. He will pull if he catches a good scent or sees a squirrel but easily managed with the use of the bridle and a correction. I will send the K-9 Bridle with him to his forever home for easy, no-pull walking.
Activity Level: He is good with a walk of a mile or so a day. He does get other exercise by playing with his foster brothers and following me around the house and yard. He can definitely settle in the house. He reads the room, if all the other dogs are running and playing he joins in. He loves a good game of tug. If everyone is relaxing, he will too.
Fence: Otto would do ok without a fence if he has regular, daily walks and playtime. He is just starting to play with toys and his foster brothers. Our home is fully fenced with a 6 foot fence. He has never tried to get out but will try to sneak past you when you go out the front door. He wants to go with you!
Behavior: This guy put the V in velcro. He is happiest when he is close to you and being pet. He is always up to do whatever you are doing. He does great in the car! He is so eager to please! He is food obsessed but has learned to stay off the counters and to not beg at the dinner table.
Medical History: Otto is very healthy, neutered, microchipped, up to date on all shots, and on monthly heartworm prevention. His next Leishmaniasis test is due in May 2025. He is currently being treated for an ear infection and my vet recommends weekly ear flushes, which will go with him to his adoptive home.
This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic and tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.
Foster Comments: Otto is the sweetest boy. He wants nothing more than to be your constant companion. He has come a long way with learning to not always jump up for attention. He does great in the car and is a friend to everyone he meets. He will whine when he can't see his human but he will settle after a bit. Otto would do best in a home where his person is home or able to be with him as much as possible. He is a dog that can go to work with you. He does well with kids but he is still learning to not jump up on people when he first sees them. He does well with other dogs but likes to be the center of attention. He would be a great only dog or a buddy with another dog that does not get jealous. He gets along with all my dogs but if one of my dogs is getting attention he needs to be in on the action. I am willing to drive an additional 500 miles for the right adopter.
Foster location: Long Beach, CA
Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“Health Certificate”). Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.
