Moose is a 5 year old, 80 pound mixed breed boy who is black and tan with a striking, glossy coat that gleams in the sunlight, highlighting his sturdy build and beautiful coloring. Despite his handsome appearance, Moose is currently a ball of energy and excitement, understandably stressed out and a bit overwhelmed by life in the shelter. When Moose is on a leash, he pulls hard, as if he’s trying to reach something—anything—that will provide him with the reassurance and attention he desperately craves. His strength is noticeable, and he can tug with surprising force, his excitement showing in every tug and shift of his body. Though he’s a bit stressed out in the shelter setting, it’s clear that Moose has so much potential. Underneath the jumpiness and stress, he’s a dog that wants to bond, to connect, and to be the loyal companion he’s meant to be. With time and patience, once he’s in a calmer environment, his exuberant personality will likely settle into a loving, eager-to-please companion. Right now, he’s just a bit overwhelmed by all the excitement, but he’s ready for the right person to help him feel more at ease, one step at a time.
Adoption fee paid by money raised by Mrs . Vigil’s Third grade class at Pinon Elementary. He is neutered and microchipped and has age-appropriate vaccinations. A licensing/microchip fee may apply.

If you have made the careful decision to bring a companion animal into your life, chances are that SFAS&HS has a dog, cat, kitten, puppy, ferret, rabbit, guinea pig, or other fuzzy critter that will match your home and lifestyle.
Matchmaking is an important part of our adoption process, and we pride ourselves on helping hopeful animal lovers find a companion that will fit their lifestyle. Think about how much time you have to spend with a new animal. Think about the time involved: a healthy puppy can live for 15 to 20 years! Remember that settling in a new four-legged family member can take some time and adjustment. Bear in mind that just like us, your companion animal will need food and supplies and have to visit a doctor from time to time.
We invite you to visit our animals in the shelter, at our satellite adoption facility inside PetsMart (3561 Zafarano Drive) or online.Once you have an idea what you’re looking for, one of our adoption counselors will visit with you and share some ideas about which of our residents would be best suited to you.
All animals are spayed or neutered before leaving and receive the required age-appropriate vaccines. The required licenses for city and county residents are available at the shelter as you adopt!
Adoption is a partnership between the adopter, the shelter and the animal. We are committed to making that partnership work for everyone.

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society is the largest animal shelter and care facility in northern New Mexico. More than 6,000 lost, stray, abandoned or injured animals come through our doors each year. As a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we receive nearly all of our funding through private donors in our community and beyond. SFAS&HS contracts with the city and county of Santa Fe to care for homeless and stray animals, as well as those brought through our front doors.
We work to reunite people with their lost animal companions, and re-home those animals that have gone unclaimed into new homes through our adoption program. Low- and no-cost spay/neuter programs address the overpopulation problems that our community faces. Humane education programs in our local schools teach children to respect and care for all living creatures. Partnered with our community, we work for change in the lives of our companion animals and to end the suffering of all animals.
