My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Maria is a 6 month old Great Pyrenees/Akbash mix who was born outside on a sheep farm with her siblings Riley and Leo. Leo has been adopted and Maria and Riley are a bonded pair who need to be adopted together. They were recently adopted and they are a bonded pair of girls who are house trained and really sweet pups. The only reason they were returned is because a family member in the home became very allergic and the family is devastated that they couldn’t keep them, but the doctor said absolutely no.

When they were surrendered to GRRAND, they had not lived in a house yet, but responded well in the kennel, and are relatively calm pups with a really great temperament. They are very easy puppies to manage with laid back personalities. They lived in a setting with 9 other dogs, so they are great with dogs and should also be fine with cats. The kennel volunteers say anyone getting these pups is very lucky!

Great Pryr/Akbash is a Guardian Dog breed that we suggest you do research on before applying for this cutie, as there are differences between LGD breeds and Golden Retrievers. They will be looking for a loving foster or forever family, with a secure fenced yard as LGD's love to be in their yard to protect and patrol, and this happens best when they are in a secure space!

They will be looking for a home that abides by the GRRAND puppy guidelines:

Puppies are a lot of work, and if you are interested in a GRRAND puppy and have children, PLEASE SEE THE ADOPTION FAQs section of the website for more detailed info. GRRAND policies stipulate a few important things that may stop you from applying, and here are 2 big ones-

A: GRRAND will NOT place a puppy under the age of 6 months with families with children under 6 yrs old

B: Any applicant with children under the age of 16, will require a home with direct access to a securely fenced yard... meaning direct access to the yard from the home… so this means no apartments or condos.

If you would like to meet Riley, please fill out an app at GRRAND.org

More about this rescue

Early in 1994, members of the Greater Louisville Golden Retriever Club began to see the need for an organization to rehabilitate and find homes for displaced and abused Golden Retrievers. A number of folks in this club began organizing an ad hoc rescue group. As the number of rescues increased over a period of months, this “wet behind the ears” group came up with a name and in 1996, incorporated the organization now known as Golden Retriever Rescue & Adoption of Needy Dogs (GRRAND). The rest, as they say, is history!
